Red Cross Honors
Arthur Kaplan
Arthur Kaplan, Atlanta at
torney and long time Red
Cross volunteer First Aid and
Water Safety instructor, was
presented with his third Cer
tificate of Merit from the
American National Red Cross
for life-saving efforts.
Mr. Kaplan has the unique
distinction of receiving three
of these coveted life-saving
awards. His first award was
signed by then president
Dwight Eisenhower; the sec
ond by the late John F. Ken
nedy: and now he adds the
latest signed by Lyndon 13.
Johnson.
His latest award was given
for his attempted rescue to
save a drowning boy in Pied
mont Park last summer.

Atlanta Jewish War Veterans Post
To Honor Harry Harrison Feb. 20
To Receive Award as
“Oustandiug Citizen”
At Commanders Banquet
Atlanta Post No. 112 Jewish
War Veterans announced this week
the selection of Harry Harrison as
recipient of its Outstanding Citi
zen” Award to be given at its
annual Commanders Banquet to
be held at the A. A. Synagogue
February 20.
Outgoing Commander Meyer
Abgott will be cited for outstand
ing work during his administra
tion. The banquet is a testimonial
to the outgoing commander.
Mr. Harrison has held top level
positions in varied communal and
national organizations. He has
been cited for his achievements
and contributions to both Jewish
and Non-sectarian groups. He is
a leader in all phases of civic
and communal life.
Mr. Harrison is renowned for his
work and contributions to social
and economic and philanthropic-
organizations. He is on the Board
of Trustees of many such or
ganizations. Mr. Harrison is pres
ident of the National Shrine to
the Jewish War Dead in Wash
ington and has held this position
for two terms. He is vice presi
dent of Shearith Israel Syna
gogue and chairman of its finance
committee. He is also on the
board of trustees of Ahavath
Achim Synagogue. He is immed
iate past co-chairman of the an
nual Bonds for Israel Govern
ment campaign in Atlanta and
has long been an outstanding
worker for the State of Israel.
Mr. Harrison was national en
campment chairman for Nation
al Jewish War Veterans Conven
tions for over ten years. He has
received many commendations
for his stand and work in behalf

been appointed Youth Director of
the Midwood Jewish Center in

at Midwood for the last three
years. His new duties wdl include

Activities program, setting up
two divisions for Junior and

dren, Mrs. Dorothy Shelby of
Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Jacque
line Pazol of Atlanta.

Shriner, Mason, Elk, Moose, and
Honorary member of Tau Epsilon
Phi Fraternity.

Gendel in Cast
Of Workmen’s Circle
Show January 16
Herschel Gendel, appearing in
the cast of “The Golden Treasure,”
being presented by the Work
men's Circle on Jan. 16, has long
been considered one of the most
outstanding and original interpre
ters of Jewish wit, humor, satire
and folklore. His authentic in
terpretation of American-Jewish
characters has won him wide ac
claim.
Mr. Gendel, a product of the
Yiddish Art Players, has mastered
all the branches of art relative to
the theater and especially the
concert stage, having studied
with Benno Schneider, Ben A.n
and Benjamin Zemach of Habima
He is not only the creator of
various humorous types and cha
racters, but also the author of
most of them and originator of
their settings.
The Golden Treasure also fea
tures Mort Freeman, prominent
baritone, Shifra Lerer, folksinger,
and Pola Kadison, pianist. This
performance is open to the public
and the admission is $1.50. The
performance will be held Sun
day, Jan. 16, 8:00 p. m. at the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter.

fund raising evening at 8:00 p. m ,
Saturday, Dec. 18, at 1135 Arling
ton Parkway, N E.
Theme of this year’s event is
“Monte Carlo Night” with the
site being transformed into a
casino. Proceeds will go to the
Workmen's Circle charities.
