ORT Plans
“ ‘Nemo the Clown’ and folk

features presented for the chil
dren of Women’s American ORT
members at the Annual Vacation
Party,” announces Mrs. Brenda
Schube, vice president of Honor
Roll. Activities begin at 2:30 p. m.
Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Frank
lin Simon’s Tea Room.
“Youngsters from three up
should enjoy the program along
with their mothers,” stressed Mrs.
Richard Greene, general chair
man. “Refreshments will highlight
the festivities and free parking
will be provided as a convenience
to the mothers.”
Sandy Koufax, perhaps the
greatest pitcher in baseball his
tory and Sport Illustrated’s
Sportsman of the Year, will speak
at a dinner Feb. 1 at the Marriott
Motor Hotel.
Reservations can be made with
Mrs. Leonard Bagen by telephon
ing 688-4646 or 355-5192. Tickets
are $25 per plate and all proceeds
go to the Leo N. Levi Memorial
National Arthritis Hospital.
SANDY KOZJFAX
Besides Koufax, stars of the At
lanta Braves baseball team of the
National League and the Atlanta
Falcons of the National Football
League will be introduced.
Koufax is the only profession
al baseball player ever twice
named recipient of the Cy Young
Award, emblematic of the finest
pitcher in the game. He won the
coveted honor this year after
pitching the Los Angeles Dodgers
to the National League champion
ship and to victory in the World
Series.
He also captured the award in
1963 as well as being named
most valuable player in the Na
tional League when he pitched
the Dodgers to the National Lea
gue crown and led them to four
straight wins in the World Series
against the mighty New York
Yankees. In the ’63 Series open
er, Koufax struck out 15 Yan
kees to establish a new strike out
record.
Although handicapped by an
arthritic pitching arm last year,
Sandy compiled the best earned
run average in the major leagues,
2.04; the most wins, 26; the most
innings pitched, 336, and the most
strikeouts, 382.
His strikeout mark shattered
Bob Feller’s single season record
of 347 strikeouts.
In last year’s World Series,
Koufax was named the starting
game pitcher. But because it came
on Yom Kippur, he declined to
pitch. He spent the opening game
day in Temple. But he came on
to whip the Minnesota Twins
twice before the Series ended,
winning, of course, in the seventh
and final game to give the Dod
gers the title.
A native of Brooklyn, N. Y.,
Koufax attended the University
of Cincinnati on a basketball
scholarship.
Sandy will arrive here the eve
ning of Jan. 31. The Koufax din
ner is at 7:00 p. m. on Feb. 1.
Joe Gerson is chairman of the
Dinner Committee. Members of
the Dinner Committee include
L
Gerre Asher, Mrs. Bernard Cohen,
Dave Center, Herb Dickson, A1
Garber, Sanford Orkin, Marvin
