the customary group of boy or
girl soldiers attempting to hitch
a ride. As I slow my car down
to query about their destinations,
it seems as though hordes of sol
diers head for the car door, and
it is all I can do to firmly insist
that my small Peugot can only
bear the weight of four husky
youngsters. With the “trempers”
now settled within the car, I take
off . . . leaving the remaining
group to return to their position
on the corner.
Once my passengers recuperate
from the instant trauma of my
tortured Hebrew, we usually chat
about any subject that happens
to catch our fancy. The mode of
life in the States is generally a
favorite with all and I find my
self spending my time and ener
gies in convincing my “trempers”
that American films are not ac
curate reflections of the kind ol
existence that the majority ol
the American population leads.
Unfortunately, our movie indus
try chooses to ignore the fact that

Ahmed Shukairy’s “Palestine
Liberation Army,” which has been
barred by King Hussein from op
erating along the long Jordanian
frontier, has increased its activ
ities in the Gaza Strip, according
to a UN survey team sent into
the area by Secretary General U
Thant to examine the United Na
tions Emergency Force (UNEF)
set up.
In its report released here this
past week, dealing with all the
problems facing the Force which
serves as a buffer between Israel
and the UAR, the team pointed
out that, according to UNEF
headquarters, “the violations of
the restricted zone during 1965
have not only shown an increase
but have been more deliberate
due to the increased activity of
the Palestine Liberation Army in
the Gaza Strip.”
The team’s report emphasized,
however, that “if UNEF had not
been deployed in the area, such
adventurous but deliberate viola-
they aid in furthering the horrid
misconceptions abroad and hence
forth, place a responsibility upon
all American travelers to dispose
of the erroneous impressions that
evolve.
There are some days, in fact,
when 1 feel like an Office of
American Information ... on
wheels. Another topic that I warm
to is the relationship of Jewry in
the Diaspora to the Israeli Jewry.
Here too, some of my passengers
have had personal insights since
they have, in many cases, come
to Israel rather recently.
As for the Sabras, their reac
tions are as varied as the envir
onment from which they have
come and depend a great deal
upon the educational orientation
that they have received either in
their homes, school or youth
groups. But whatever the case
may be, we usually end up by
having a spirited discussion and
only reluctantly do I disgorge my
passengers at their destinations.
Though you may have heard it
before, it bears repeating that the
Israeli Army is not only a de
fense force in the strictest sense
of the word, but is the most val
uable tool for integrating a large
section of the Israeli society.
Whether on a conscious or sub
conscious level, a more united
Israeli people are being hammer
ed out on the anvil of compulsory
military training.
The eighteen-year-old boy or
girl who spends his two-and-one-
half years of service (in the case
of the boys) or twenty months
(in the case of the girls) general
ly comes out of the Armed Forces
clash between the Israel Defense
Forces and the Palestine Libera
tion Army posts deployed just be
hind the restricted zone on the
Armistice Demarcation Lines.”
This latter statement by U
Thant’s survey team reveals
clearly that a whole series of
Arab guerrilla posts are operating
in the Gaza Strip under the ben
evolent protection of the UAR.
The survey team concluded that
UNEF still fulfills “a pressing
need in acting as an informal buf
fer between the armed forces of
Israel and the UAR” and that
“the situation on the Line has not
in recent years changed in any
way which would justify a formal
change in the mandate.”
Revised Version
Of “The Deputy”
To Tour Nation
NEW YORK (WUP) — “The
Deputy,” the controversial play
on the late Pope Pius XII and
the murder of the 6,000,000 Jews
by the Nazis, will go on a 26-
week tour through the nation
late this month in a somewhat
restaged form. The opening per
formance will take place in Bos
ton on December 26.
The new sponsor of the pro
duction is Sherwin Robert Rod
gers of Chicago. Herman Shum-
lin, the original director and co-
producer of the Rolf Hochhuth
drama, is not involved in the new
venture except that he and his
two partners, Zvi Kolitz and Al
lred Crown, will share in the
profits.
The original 1 play ran 318 per
formances on Broadway. Al
though it had been scheduled to
go on tour, Mr. Shumlin was
forced to cancel the venture due
to the lack of sufficient bookings
resulting from opposition by sev
eral timid theatre owners, most
bV them Jews.
Among some of the actors in
the new production will be Ian
Wolfe, Lester Matthews, Noah
Keen, Paul Lambert, Robert
Brown and W. A. Glover. Gordon^
Davidson directed the restaging
of the play.

Then, too, I feel a sense of joy
to be able to communicate with
these young people, even though
my Hebrew is faulty. Perhaps the
greatest pride I derive is in find

extent the idea that American
