THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Daughter Married To An Israeli
The Karl of Balfour Says Israel
Fulfilled Uncle’s Prophecies
NEW YORK (WUP) —“Israel,
by its miraculous achievements
and great progress in aiding de
veloping nations in Asia and
Africa has fulfilled my uncle’s
prophecies made at the opening
of the Hebrew University at Mt.
Scopus in April, 1925.”
Thus stated the Earl of Balfour,
nephew of the late Lord Balfour,
in a stirring address delivered
before the American Friends of
the Hebrew University at the an
nual “Scopus Award” dinner held
recently at the New York Hilton
Hotel.
The Earl cited this prophecy
his uncle made in 1925: “The ex
periment is predestined to succeed
not only for the Jewish peoples
but for all mankind.”
Declaring that “by kinship” he
feels “linked to Israel” and that
“nothing can divide me from your

hopes and wishes,” the Earl re
vealed that his youngest daugh
ter had married an Israeli who
had made his way to Israel from
Hungary.
Only 15 years of age when Lord
Balfour issued the famous decla
ration which gave such great
hopes to world Jewry the Earl
told the spellbound and thrilled
audience that he was very proud
at the time that his uncle should
have been the one to have taken
the historic step in making “the
final gesture of repayment that
the Christian civilization owed
the Jews.”
Taking up the Arab charge of
dual loyalty made against Amer
ican citizens of the Jewish faith,
the Earl cited the cases of the
Welsh and Scotch people who,
while remaining patriotic to their
own countries, still maintain a
loyalty to Britain.
With an obvious criticism oi
those Jews who do not support
Israel, the Earl mentioned the
fact that his uncle had found the
most difficult people to convince
of the need of a Jewish Homeland
were some of the old British Jew
ish families.
When Lord Balfour died in
1930, he had left his estate to
his nephew. Hitler’s crimes
against the Jews so greatly dis
turbed the Earl that he decided
there and then to take an active
part in aiding the escapees.

Silver Lining

This season of the year is a
most proper setting for concern
over what to do next midwin
ter.
Many group s,
sitting aro u n d

coldish days, are
already planning
next seas on’s
programs.
They are block
ing out the cal
endar, se t ti n g
aside certain
dates, chatti n g
about speakers and entertainers
that might entice a crowd, and
visualizing the agenda of 1966.
And, with the calendar in front
of them, many of them are
making a piquant discovery.
This New Year’s Eve falls on
a Friday night.
What to do?
Of course, this isn’t much of a
problem for many. Most Jews
seem to be “Seventh Day Absen-
tists,” ignoring worship on the
Sabbath.
In fact, one rabbi has adopted
a new slogan: “Be a non-con
formist. Go to temple.”
It is one thing, however, for an
organization to know that most
people pay scant attention to the
Sabbath, and another to plan a
gay New Year’s Eve party on the
Sabbath.
Remember, too, that many
Jewish organizations and not a
few congregations include New
Year’s Eve parties on their pro
grams. These events yield fun
and also revenue.
Last year both Christmas and
New Year’s Day fell on Friday
nights, and, as a consequence,
many rabbis modified their wor
ship schedule.
But when New Year’s Eve and
Shabbos Eve coincide, what do
you do?
It is fruitless to argue that New
Year’s Day is not a Jewish hol
iday and that therefore Jews may
overlook it. They won’t. It is
equally fruitless to contend that
New Year's Eve is actually a
holvday for some Christians and
is known as the Feast of Circum
cision fcoming, as it does, eight
days after December 25).
The custom of celebrating New
Year’s Eve is firmly fixed in our
mores. True, some people are
wearying of the forced festivity on
that occasion. This was pointed
up in a cartoon in the New
Yorker magazine in which the
lady is saying to her friend, “Oh,
but our party is for people who
hate New Year’s Eve parties.”
Alternatives for those facing
the situation are to attend serv
ices that Friday night and go off
later to a party, or 2) to postpone
the hilarity to Saturday night, or
3) to ignore New Year’s Eve en
tirely. Which do you favor?
