OY OY OY! REPORTS ON
OY OY SEVEN
Sitting in my office, enjoying
to the fullest my cover as a news
paper woman, I heard the sinister
sound of my “hot line” phone
ringing. A top priority call was
coming through. It was the voice
of Norman Shavin, ace columnist
for the Atlanta Constitution.
“Weinstein. . . Loxfinger,” he
said. “Now . . . You ready?"
Only too well I knew what the
terse message signified. Sol Wein
stein, creator of Oy Oy Seven,
(the terrifying Israeli agent,
Israel Bond), had arrived.
‘Ready,” I replied.
“Ten minutes then,” the sel
dom shaven Shavin said. He rung
off.
Quickly I cleared my desk of
my important papers. (Next

BROTHERS
When families who were "dif
ferent” moved into a “nice” East
Bay neighborhood, many whites
fled. Others, like Mrs John
Ulrich, stayed and kept their
children in the multi-racial pub
lic school. Mrs. Ulrich became
Den Mother to an enchanting
pack of Cub Scouts—Orientals,
Negroes and Caucasians.
One day, chauffering a car full
of Cubs after school, she stopped
at a red light. A little girl stared
at the crowded car and exclaim
ed: “Wow! How can that lady be
the mother of ALL those
children?”
After a pause, Mrs. Ulrich’s
son snorted: "Boy, is SHE stupid.
How could we possibly be
brothers? After all, we’re all ten
years old.’’
UPWARD BOUND
Take 76 boys from tough
poverty areas in Oregon, includ
ing a sprinkling from migrant
families and some who have serv
ed time in reform schools. Add a
dash of counselors and teachers
in English, math, social studies
and reading. Stir into pre-college
training througlr a poverty grant
to the University of Oregon. How
does the dish taste?
One boy, a slow student in
public school with an I. Q. score
ranging from 80 to 90, was dis
covered to have a natural and
ready ability in mathematics. Be
fore the summer program was
half over, he was doing compli
cated calculus problems, and-
helped his fellow students. His
I. Q. score jumped more than 30
points.
Others have become interested
in art, one is now studying sculp
ture. While not all have made
such enoromous strides, their
progress has been so rapid that
one teacher said, “These kids are
light ages away from where they
were when we first started this
program.”

"Weinstein’s coming over,” I

“So? Okay,” I said.
Enter Sol Weinstein. His cov

Cleancut. Sort of “Nice-Jewish-
boy-next-door” stuff. Was he
truly, behind the boyish mask,
the fiendish, funnish author re

best-sexing opus? I determined
to be on my toes throughout this
interview! Quickly I removed my
