A New Flow of Arms
UNITED NATIONS (WUP) —
Golda Meir’g parting speech to
the Knesset rang
with the omin-|F®“
ous warning that
a new flow of
American and
British arms to\,
the Arabs threat-^-'

to upset the mil-f

balance at the|
expense of Is-
reaL
This warning of the retiring
Minister of Foreign Affairs fol
lowed closely on the heels of two
major decisions in Washington—
both stacked with heavy arma
ment for the Arab states.
Saudi Arabia, land of giant U.S.
air bases, is being supplied with
over 400 million dollars in the
latest type fighter Jets and dead
ly missiles shrinking the distance
between that country and Israel
to probably less than an hour.
Jordan, which, it may be said, is
just across the street from Israel,
is being supplied with some 100
Patton tanks and other lethal
weapons. This puppet state needs
neither the speed nor the hours
of the Saudi planes to be across
the thin chalk-line of the frontier.
No wonder Golda Meir cried
out in anguish—and who can say,
in the light of the tense and emo
tional situation that keeps ani
mosity at a high pitch against Is
rael—that this was merely a cry
of a Cassandra?
Of course, it would be absurd
to believe that the United States
is supplying these arms for the
specific use against Israel? The
bigwigs in Washington would be
rightly shocked at such a thought
For them, this is merely one more
chess move in the game for the
Middle East with its strategic sig
nificance. Thus, expediency, not
principle nor questions Involving
what is right and what Is wrong,
remains the order of the day.
Undoubtedly, Washington has in
mind the constant threat posed by
the Soviet-Nasser-Yemen axis
with its popular movements in
soclstes snd successors, to be Incorp
orated under the name of:
THE CHURCH OF GOD
FOR ALL NATIONS. INC.
2.
The principal office of aald corp-
oraUon shall be in Futon County,
Georgia, with the privilege of estab
lishing branch offices and places of
worship in other locaUons as It may
determine by proper legal acUon.
3.
The purpose and object of said corp
oration Is not for pecuniary gain to
any of the officers or members or
the congregation Rself.
The general nature of the business
Is that of operating places of worship
wherever the Board of Deacons may
determine and to perform such other
acts relating to church and religious
matters as the Board of Deacons may
determine. The corporation also
desires those powers and to be bound
by those obligations as are set out
In Code Section 22-4 of the 1933 Code
of the State of Georgia as amended
me corporation also desires the
right to buv, sell, or otherwise acquire
land; to Improve the same by the
erection of churches or dwellings and
*ueh other buildings as the Board of
Deacons may determine; and to rent,
lease, sel’ or otherwise d'soose of the
same as Its Board of Deacons mav
determine. Corporation further desires
the right to have those powers which
are normally granted to corporations
In the operation of the affairs of the
corporation, when those operations are
for the purpose of furthering the
cause of its religious teachings and
functions which are nnrmallv those
of churches established for the furth
erance of carrying out the word of
God.

Aden, Oman and in the whole of
the South Arabian Federation.
Involved also is the Yemen-
Saudi Arabian crisis. Peace talks
have hit a stumbling-block with
the result that the UAR forces
have not budged an inch from
the area despite the provisions to
do this by the November 23rd
deadline which, the Saudi now
point out, is obviously overdue.
It is also the belief in Washing
ton that recent negotiations be
tween Cairo and Moscow have
greatly strengthened Nasser’s pos
ition. The new arms are there
fore a checkmate to this suppos
ition.
The question may be asked:
Which arms race and which arms
balance are involved in this mad
dening supply of deadly weapons?
As far as Israel is concerned—
it is herself on one platter of
the scale and the Arabs on the
other. Actually, however, there
now appears to be an arms race
also between the radical Nasser
states and the Monarchial coun
tries, and the strange role of the
U. S. is to feed both with a proper
sense of priorities. For example:
which is more important—Viet
nam or Israel? The Middle East

Vietnam or Israel? The answer
to this question Involves a sense
of sacrifice, and for Washington
the answer is somewhat easier to
swallow than it is for Israel.
No one knows exactly what
Golda Meir meant in her parting
warning that Israel will never be
outstripped in defences. Presum
ably, there will be others, friends
of the United States, who will
supply her with enough of arms
to maintain that mysterious bal
ance which makes up national se
curity in the region. The U. S.
may even prod such friends to
make the scales. But the question
will still remain: What of the
last straw that will break the
economic back of the Middle East
camel?
The United States is not Ignor
ant of the fact that the Arabs
have sworn to destroy the Jewish
State the moment they have suf
ficient arms and are ready for
the putsch. By granting aid, both
military and economic, Washing
ton is abetting Israel’s sworn en
emies to attain their hoped-for
goal. It would have been In wis
dom and in the true spirit of the
American ideal if the White House
and the policy makers in the Stats
Department had insisted upon an
Arab-Israeli peace settlement as
the price of the aid they are
giving them.
Such a move might alto induce
the Soviet Union to make a sim
ilar approach jn the area. It Is
to the interest of both the USSR
and the U. S. that peace be main
tained in that troublesome zone.
The greater problem for these
two Powers today is China and
not an arms race In the Mideast
Crescent.
