As We Were Saying
By ROBERT SEGAL
(A Seven Art* Feature)
A Minnesota jury award of
$10,000 to a distinguished Amer
ican, Dr. Arnold M. Rose, who
had the courage to strike back
at those who said he had “col
laborated with Communists,” may
bring in a new era of panic for
those who play with the smear
brush.
Co-author with Gunnar Myrdal
and Richard Stem of the monu
mental study of American Ne
groes, “An American Dilemma,”
Professor Rose is one of the
world’s outstanding social sci
entists. When he went into the
Minnesota legislature, he gave
notice that he didn’t intend to
employ all of his time behind the
ivy, writing books and articles
that have earned him a reputa
tion as a reliable authority on
race relations. Rose is a fighter;
and when Minnesota neighbors
threw mud at him, he seized the
challenge.
Perhaps not since a Superior
Court jury in the state of Wash
ington awarded John and Sally
Goldmark $40,000 in their suit
against those who had linked
them with Communism during a
political campaign has such a
telling victory been won against
the tar-bucket brigade.
Dr. Rose brought his action
against Gerda Koch, pamphleteer
and lecturer, and Christian Re
search, Inc. Miss Koch, on the
stand, acknowledged that she had
edited a pamphlet in 1963 that
Jtated in her handwriting: “Do
Minnesotans want a teacher at its
University and a lawmaker at
its capitol who collaborates with
a ‘Communist’ and with Com
munist fronters?” She asserted
that she was thus referring to
Rose in connection with his part
nership with Myrdal. The dam
aging pamphlet embraced a re
print of information presented to
a U. S. Senate subcommittee but
apparently never published by
the subcommittee.
While Miss Koch was on the
stand, she reportedly said she
had concluded that President
Kennedy had taken positions
helping Moscow. “Do you mean
that Kennedy was a Communist
dupe?” District Judge Donald T.
Barbeau asked her. Miss Koch
replied: “The Communists are
very clever at brainwashing.”
A sample of the bilge dished
out during the Minnesota hearing
was the statement by Miss Koch’s
lawyer that the barrister was sat

If you look into the story of
Miss Koch’s brand of American
ism, you will find her vehicle,
Christian Research, ostensibly
aims “to arouse and encourage
intelligent action." The service
includes answers to inquiries
about “shady, pink and red or
ganizations.”
One of the ministers on the
board of Christian Research has
a record of anti-Semitic and anti-
Catholic activities, according to
the researcher, Ralph Lord Roy,
author of “Apostles of Discord.”
When Miss Koch goes searching
for authorities to quote, she
sometimes uses Kenneth Goff,
energetic worker on the far right.
Goff used to team up with Ger
ald L. K. Smith and doesn’t hes
itate to employ anti-Semitism.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars
has a spokesman who has said of
Goff that he is "destructive of
our fundamental laws.” Among
Christian Research’s own cited
sources are Robert Welch and the
John Birch Society magazine,
“American Opinion.”
Shall we ever have an end of
indiscriminate and uninformed
attacks on men like Arnold Rose
by people who invoke the cry
of "Communism!” in lieu of co
gent arguments? Must busy and
devoted scholars like Arnold
Rose take days out of their con
structive duties to battle the
senseless denigrations hurled at
them? The late Adlai Stevenson
touched the heart of this new
American dilemma when he said:
"Extremism in America . . . lies,
distortion, abuse, threats, violence
. . . all . . . spring from the dark
side of the human psyche, where
fear and lust for power unleash
on human society horrors which
can end in the concentration
camp and the gas chamber.” He
quoted that not only men’s char
acter could thus be shamefully
marred but that our nation itself
could be debased.
And if those who cry ‘Com
munist!’ at men and women hold
ing views at odds and with their
own will not heed a judge or a
Jury or an Adlai Stevenson, per
haps they will listen to J. Edgar
Hoover who has written:
“Too often have I seen cases
where loyal and patriotic but
misg u i d e d Americans have
thought they were ‘fighting com
munism’ by slapping the label of
‘Red’ or ‘Communist’ on anybody
who happened to be different
from them or to have ideas with
which they did not agree. Smears,
character assassination and the
scattering of irresp o n s i b 1 e
charges have no place in this na
tion. They create division, sus
picion. and distrust among loyal
Americans—Just what the Com
munist want—and hinder rather
than aid the fight against com
munism.”
