Til IODTBIIN IIIAILITI
Koffee Klatch
I’m not talking about Jews who
write best-selling novels (some
of which have meaning and sig
nificance, but most of which do
not). I don’t refer to “great
Jews.” These, admittedly, we
have by the score . . . each gen
eration, each country, has pro
duced them. And thank God for
them.
But the spokesman for all? The
Yiddishe Billy Graham? Where
is he?
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, Ben
Gurion of Israel, Sen. Herbert
Lehman, Henrietta Szold . . .
These were great Jews. But they
spoke for only a segment of
Jewry. Who speaks for all?
What kind of man would this
spokesman be? Would hp be a
to shirk the theological Socrates? A writer or
scholar—some modern Maimone-
de4 In the ranks of our present
Jewish Talmudic Scholars, does
such a man exist?
Or would he be less the viewer,
more the doer? A man of action,
let’s say. An administrative gen
ius, a diplomatic genius.
Possibly eloquence is the key.
Will our man come from the Rab
binical fold? Some Rabbi whose
sermons are beyond the oratorical
beauty of all others. Who knows
how to express himself so that
all the world can hear and under
stand and be swayed by his
words. But this is a secular so
ciety with which only the greatest
Rabbi could cope.
Scholar, statesman, orator —
which will he be? Perhaps he
must needs be all three.
Does such a person live today?
If so, will he come forth now
and speak for us?
For today, too many scholars
are laying aside their books . . .
too many rabbis are leaving their
pulpits for the business world . .

Who Speaks
for the Jews?
Once there was Abraham.
Then came Moses lollowed Dy a
long line of assorted Judges,
Prupheis and Kings. Every
bunuay School child knows their
names—they are Biblical legend.
Almost always in our rich his
tory there has been some one
Jew who relused
huge responsibility of welding
divergent factions into one peo
ple. Some one Jew who was not
afraid to let his voice be heard
... to let it be carried on the
winds and tides across the civ-
lized world.
Today? The shoes of the leader
of world Jewry go unfilled! Who
would seek to wear these leaky,
creaky — these muddy, bloody
shoes? What man dares to wear
them? Stained with the toil and
grime inevitably to be found
trodding ahead through the muck
of mankind, seeing a path for
others to follow.
Today, as never before, we
need a spokesman. These very
times of unprecedented prosper
ity may be our biggest danger!
To me they cry out for a banner
we Jews can rally behind—and
a man to carry that banner, to
hold it high, to give us pride, dig
nity, and yet humility.
I don’t mean a Godhead or a
Messiah. I mean a man ... a
man of God . . . but a man to
lead men.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Is
rael’s population reached 2,-
600,000 at the end of last year,
according to figures released
here by the Central Bureau of
Statistics. The total included
300,000 non-Jews. The 1965 fig
ure represented a population
increase of 2.9 percent during
the year compared with a 3.9
percent increase during 1964.
The slower rate of population
growth last year was attributed
to a decrease in immigration.
Israel’s Arab popul a t i o n
is growing at a much faster
rate than is the Jewish, official
statistics show. During the past
12 years, the Jewish natural in
crease fell from 26.3 per thou
sand to 16.2. At the ^ame time,
the Arab rate rose from 37.8
per thousand to 48. One-third
of Israel's Jewish population is
aged 14 or under but the same
age group constitutes half of
the Arab population.
