Chattanooga Women Square Away for Division's Drive
Mrs. Jack Tepper has been
named Chairman of the 1966
Chattanooga Jewish Welfare Fed
eration Women’s Division Cam
paign and Mrs. Mervin Pregul-
man and Mrs. Isadore Kaset
have been named as Associate
Chairmen of the Women’s Divis
ion, it was announced this week
by Meyer Siskin, general chair
man of the 1966 Drive.
The Women’s Division has set
>12,702 as its goal toward the
$110,000 goal which the total
campaign seeks to raise. Serving
as vice-chairmen in the Women’s
Division are Mesdames Harold
Benowitz, Lawrence Levine, Gar
rison Siskin, Harold Schwartz,
Mose Siskin, Deene Leventhal,
Barney Brody, Sam Binder, Wil
liam Raider, Ted Robbins, Ira
Trivers, Meyer D. Winer, Bern
ard Kronenberg, Mever Siskin,
Dan Friedman, Jake Frumin, and
Mrs. Julius Kushner. Approxi
mately 600 women will partici
pate in this phase of the cam
paign which seeks to raise funds
for the United Jewish Appeal and
40 other local. national and over
seas beneficiary agencies.
The Women’s Division has
scheduled a series of meetings to
accomplish its purpose the first of
which is a Captains Orientation
Workshop. This meeting will be
held Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 10 a. m.
at the Jewish Community Center
in Room 7 and will feature as
guest speaker Mrs. Sam P. Alter-
man of Atlanta.
Mrs. Alterman is co-chairman
of the Pace Setters of the Fed
eration Drive in her community,
is a past over-all chairman of the
drive, and has headed every di
vision in the campaign in past
years.

Mrs. Alterman is also active in
synagogue and B’jiai B’rith work,
and in transcribing Hebrew
Braille through the local Temple
Sisterhood. She is also active in
civic and PTA work.
The first major fund raising
function of the Women’s Division
will be a $100 minimum gifts
luncheon to be held Wednesday,
February 23, at the home of Mrs.
M. B. Seretean. Speaker for the
$100 Minimum Gifts Luncheon
will be Aftss Israel, Frieda Abra
ham, Israel’s first lady of beauty.

man of a Women’s Division Tel
ephone Committee. Mrs. Charles
Lebovitz is serving as publicity

NEW YORK (JTA)—A state
ment by New York School Su
perintendent Bernard E. Dono
van that closing down of the
city’s schools on Jewish high
holy days would make it neces
sary to lengthen the school year
was protested by the Jewish
Teachers Association, which has
17,000 members.
Martin Dodell, president of
the teachers group, told the Su
perintendent that the regulation
closing the schools on those hol
idays was passed not for religi
ous reasons but “because the
safety of the chidren was in
volved."
He wrote also that while the
teachers “do not. and cannot, as
a matter of policy, approve or

will issue a postage stamp hon
oring the memory of the late
Prof. Albert Einstein. Because
Dr. Einstein spent his final
years here, the first-day cover
will be sold by the Princeton
post office on March 14.
UOR Places Ban
On Orthodox Shule
Mass. (jiA)—
A ban on an Orthodox synagogue
in suburban Longmeadow was
declared by the Lluion of Orth
odox Rabbis of the United States
and Canada. The congregation is
B’nai Jacob Synagogue. The ban
strips the synagogue of its sanc
tity and forbids its use for serv
ices and other religious events
by the Orthdox communities of
Springfield and Longmeadow.
The rabbinic body charged the
synagogue and its ritual commit
tee with alleged severing of “the
historic character of the syna
gogue” and with “deviating from
the standards of Orthodox Juda
ism.” It also charged that the
congregation had brought “false
accusations" against its former
rabbi, who had served the syn
agogue 25 years. The statement
did not name the rabbi.
