Hits - Splits - Bowling Bits
AJCC MENS' LEAGUE
Let’s see just how smart you
readers are who scan this column
each week—pick out the correct
name in the following statement:
The hero in sports who was in
town last week was (a) Sandy
Koufax (b) Sandy Winston (c)
Sandy Shmerling ... If your
answer was a, b, or c, you were
perfectly correct. . . Koufax
you’ve already read about, since
he is no doubt the greatest today

and we hope next year also—the
other Sandys I’ll fill ydu in on
now. . .
If either of these fellows ap
proached you in a bowling alley
and tried to bet a few bucks on
their bowling skills, the odds are
right heavy that you’d grab the
chance and borrow the Cash to
gamble on—in most cases and at
any other time, you’d probably^
be right, but not last week. . .
Actually, the only difference
in these two Sandys was about
100 pounds, 1000 words, and
10,000 hairs—their bowling was
about equal . . . Sandy Winston,
carrying the highest average and
the heaviest hair in the league,
increased both last week by skip
ping out on his barber’s appoint
ment (he really uses some lawn-
mower gervice company) and
shearing the pins with a power
ful 234 single and a big 610 series,
despite the fact that only five
people in the league were pull
ing for him—his teammates and
his wife—the little Mighty Mouth
really deserves credit, fighting
off over eighty sets of horns—the
guy is mighty hard to stop, but
what galls me is that he knows
it! . . .
Now the other Sandy, better
known as Dr. Sanford Shmerling,
is just the opposite—quiet, unas
suming, never cocky (after all,
his average is only about 120

something, which is very good if
you’re measuring blood pressure,
but Doc,^baby, this is bowling);
so anyway, the doctor finally
makes a perfect diagnosis: (if
you get strikes, you don’t get to
worry about making the spares)
and operates on the pins for a
great and successful 219 single—
unfortunately, on the next game
the patient didn’t exactly die,
but the good doctor did—we
won’t go into that figure, how
ever, because someday I may
have to see him on a professional
call again, and his needle is a
little more painful than mine. . .
Suffice it to say that I am now
proud to mention that he is
actually a cousin of mine—before
that big game, however, I must
admit that I didn’t hardly speak
to him around the alley! Good
bowling, Sanford. . .
The following high games were
also rolled last week by the
worst assortment possible, to wit:
Gerald (Juke Box) Friedman,
the record rajah, recorded a hit
tune with a 204, on the flip side
a 111 clinker . . . Harvey Spiel-
holz played around with a 203
single . . . Sam Frankel won an
other tough case with a 213 de
cision . . .. Fred Benamy, the Tile
Driver, patterned a smooth 209...
Herb Selk, the real estate hand
ler, plotted a 210.. .Abe Levinson,
the guy behind the camera (no
wonder he pulls that black cloth
over his dome—you ever notice
that head) snapped a 209. . . And
Stan Silverman, the human Sher
man tank, flattened the pins with
a 212, which was exactly his
weight when he was Bar
Mitzvahed at age 16 (No, I ain’t
stupid—he was) I know you get
Bar Mitzvahed at age 15. . .
