the Jewish War
Veterans. Com
mander Meyer J. Abgott attended
as the commander of the then
largest post in the Nation, Post
No. 25 of Buffalo, N. Y.
Prior to coming to Atlanta in
1959 Commander Abgott made
his home in Buffalo. He was the
only Jew prior and since to be
elected to the Buffalo City Coun
cil (similar to Atlanta’s Board of
Aldermen) where he served with
distinction. His background of
civic and charitable work in the
City of Buffalo was one well
recognized and apDreciated.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Alhadeff of
Miami announce the engagement
of their daughter Sheryl Sue to
H ward Barry Crane, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Daniel Crane of Rego
Park, Queens, N. Y.
The Alhadeffs are former res
idents of Atlanta. Miss Alhadeff
is the granddaughter of Mrs.
Sadie Froug formerly of Atlanta,
and Isaac Alhadeff of At anta.
A summer wedding in M ami
has been planned.
Axelrad—Manning
HOUSTON— The engagement
of Miss Diane Axelrad to Arthur
M. Manning of Houston, s n of
Emanuel Z. Manning of Savan
nah, and the late Mrs. Manning,
is announced by her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Max Axelrad.
The bride-elect attended the
University of Texas, where she
was a member of Delta Phi Ep
silon sorority, and did graduate
work at the University of Colo
rado and San Francisco State
College.
She holds a master’s degree in
education from the University of
Houston, where she is a member
of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary
Society.
Mr. Manning was graduated
from the Georgia Institute of
Technology and is now instruct
ing in the photography depart
ment of Sam Houston State Col
lege. He is also a major in the
Texas Air National Guard.
The wedding is planned for
June 12 in the Congregation Beth
Yeshurun in Houston.
Weinberg—Harkins
Mr. and Mrs. George Weinberg
of Columbia, S.C., announce the
engagement of their daughter,
Judith Diane Weinberg, to Robert
L. Harkins, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Harkins of Augusta. The
wedding will be held March 19.
The bride-elect attended the
University of Georgia and is em
ployed by the Southern Bell
Telephone Co. in Atlanta. Mr.
Harkins attends the University of
Georgia.

The Bat (Shalom study group
will meet Thursday, Feb. 10,
8:15 p.m. at the home of Mrs.

N.E. Mrs. Gerald Sher will dis
cuss “Don Isaac Abravanel.”
The cooking class will meet
Thursday, Feb 17, 8:15 p.m. at
the home of Mrs. Warren Alifeld,
1943 Oak Grove Rd., N.E.
Mrs. Alifeld will demonstrate
the preparation of Potato Kugel.
There will be a presentation of
colored slides on “Color In The
Home,” which will be narrated
by Mrs. Neil Lesser.

MRS. SOLOMON
Schankerman—Solomon
Mr. and Mrs. William J.
Schankerman of Grand Rapids,
Mich., announce the marriage of
their daughter, Morene Lois, to
Arthur E. Solomon. The bride
groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Philip Solomon of Atlanta.
Rabbi Harry Epstein officiated
at the ceremony which took place
Sunday, Feb. 6, at the home of
the bridegroom.
Mrs. Elaine Kirshenbaum of
St. Joseph, Mich., sister of the
bride, was matron of honor. Miss
Sherry Solomon of Atlanta, sis
ter o^ the groom, and Mrs.
Marshall Solomon, sister-in-law
of the groom, were bridesmaids.
Philip Solomon of Atlanta was
his son’s best man. Groomsmen
were David Kirshenbaum and
Marshall Solomon.
A dinner was held at the Pro-
gresive Club following the cere
mony. Following a wedding trip
to Miami Beach, the newlyweds
will live at Druid Valley Apart
ments, 1417-C Willow Lake Dr.,
Atlanta.

These are but a few of his
many endeavors for he played a
leading role in many charitable
projects including the Buffalo
Jewish Welfare Fund, Israel'-
Bonds, Community Chest, Red
Cross, Toys for Tots, Eye Bank
and many others. Commander
Abgott was also Western Dis
trict Council Commander of De
partment of New York JWV.
Among his various affiliations
are the Buffalo Lodge, No. 846,
J. E. A.M., Jonathan David
Lodge, Knights of Pythias, Vari
ety Club and many others.
In the fall of 1959 Commander
Abgott moved to Atlanta where
he immediately continued his
participation in Community and
Fratern al organizations. For
three years he served as Field
Representative for Israel Bonds
for the Southeast. Then in 1962
he joined the Victor Fischel Co.,
national distributor of Carstairs
Whiskey and Wolfschmidt Vodka
as regional manager.

at th-s event by the B’nai B’rith
Atlanta Organization.

The fourth and final concert of
the Atlanta Symphonv’s Surbur-
ban Series at Westminster
Schools will be held at 3:30 p.m.,
February 20.
Westminster’s Robert Spence
will perform Beethoven’s Third
Piano Concerto.

46th Birthday
The Or VeShalom Sisterhood
will celebrate its 46th Anniver
sary with a luncheon at 12:30
p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the
Progressive Club.

Commander Abgott’s charming
wife Jeanette is an active mem
ber of the Ladies Auxiliary
where she has continued an un
broken tenure of 19 years as a
V.A.V.S. representative and is a
past president of the Buffalo
Post, No. 25, Ladies Auxiliary.
The Abgotts have one child, a
daughter, Mrs. Robert (Sandra)
Fisher, of Cherry Hill, N.J. She
is a graduate of the University
of Georgia where she was a
member of Delta Phi Epsilon
Sorority. The Abgotts are also
blessed with a grandson, Philip
Fisher.
Commander Abgott is a vet
eran of World War II in which
he served as an enlisted man and
officer in Field Artillery for
some six years, four of which
were spent in the Pacific. He is
the holder of the Silver Star in
addition to other citations.

which time Harry Harrison will
receive the “Outstanding Citizen
Award” and National Comman
der Milton A. Waldor will be the
guest speaker.

tertainment.

He plans to do graduate work
