state of weightlessness carry out
all those tasks? What if they
make a miscalculation?.
As the flights get longer, the
period of suspense gets more pro
tracted. I hear there are still a
number of flights in the program
called Gemini (one six-year old
in our religiouS school guessed
they are called gemini because so
many people exclaim: “Jiminee!
How do they do it?”). That
means more endurance tests for
those wonderful astronauts—and
endurance tests for us sensitive
earthlings, too, as we “sweat
them out" in their long waiting
period, in their long flights, in
their retro-rocketing descents.
Now I’m not propos’ng to Nasa
that we don’t publicize these
flights. I take pr’de in the gov
ernment’s frequent claim that it
doesn’t keen them secret. Mv
only plea is that they w ; thhold
the publicity until the flight is
over.
Take all the pictures you want.
Expose every minute of the ex
ploit. But do it, dear Nasa, when
it’s all over—and then show it
on television.
If I know that I’m watching
something that took place in the
past I won’t be so jumpy. But all
the time our boys are up there
I’m jittery. I try to avo : d hsten-
ing or watching, but how long
can you elude a radio or televis
ion set these days?
There must be some other mil
quetoasts around. What damage
would be done if my modest
proposal were to be accepted. It
wouldn’t affect the quest for the
moon, but it assuredly would

Since I have a much higher re

this column who has any influ

would convey a message for me.
I would beg of Nasa that they
change the method of publicizing
the flights of the astronauts. It is
not that I’m not interested in the
exploits of the daring young men
in their whirling machines. It is
that I am.
