The historical novel, The
Chosen One, written by Harry
Simonhoff took a great deal of
patient research and scholarship.
The hero of the book is Sal-
omo Molko, a self-deluded Mes
siah, who took upon himself the
task of bringing about the Geulah
or redemption of Israel and the
return of the Jews to Eretz Is-
roel. He was inspired by a chance
meeting with a Jewish prince,
David Reubeni, sent by his bro
ther, King Joseph, who allegedly
reigned over an unknown Jewish
kingdom of Chaibar, probably on
the Coast of India. Their task was
to enlist the Pope and the King
of Portugal in waging war against
the Grand Turk and to reconquer
the Holy Land for the resettle
ment of the scattered Jewish
tribes in their ancient homeland.
This noble figure was a mystic
steeped in Cabbalistic lore, in the
visions and prophesies which
nourished his quest for a solu
tion of the desperate Jewish sit
uation. The hero emerges from
the author’s skilled hand a mag
netic and dedicated man, who
eagerly gives un h’s life on the
auto-da-fe for Kiddush Hashem,
the holy name of God.
Ordinarily an obscure but au
thentic figure such as Molko is
left to smoulder in his long for
gotten grave. There is little in
Jewish history about him. The
longest account is in Graetz. Yet
the author paints a glowing pic
ture of Molko and an interesting,
absorbing panorama of the Re
naissance as well as of all the
characters that move through the
novel. The activities of the
princes of the Catholic church,
including the inhuman treatment
of relapsed Conversos at the
hands of the Inquisition, are
its original charter be considered and
granted.

graphically described.
There is an intimate connection
between Molko and the Catholic
church in that he was baptized
and a Christian until 24 when the
secret of his Jewish ancestry was
revealed by his mother on her
deathbed. After his self-inflicted
circumcision he changed the
Christian name Diogo Pirez to
Salomo Molko.
A notable passage in the book
is an address in a Roman syn
agogue by Molko couched in
beautiful prose and reminiscent
of Isaiah’s vision of reconstituted
Israel by its redeemer the Mes
siah. Also striking is the Cab
balistic vision of the seven
heavens through which Molko
passes on the fiery chariot.
A touching and beautifully
descriptive scene is Molko on his
white donkey passing through the
Roman Ar‘ - h of T’ti's which
commemorates the destruction of
the Holy Temple in Jerusalem
His followers express the pent-up
loathing of centuries as well as
their sense of momenf-rv fruimoh
when they look at the ruin and
rubble of what was once the
grandeur of Imperial Rome, the
despoiler of ancient Jud«a.
There are other descriptions of
characters important in the book.
For example, a Jewish physician
who became an informer and
poisoner, a type who caused
Jews throughout the centuries
untold agon>es and per«'’''"4ion
There is a Christian archbishop,
who later was a pope, burning
with terrific zeal. He instigates
the recreation of the Inqusition
in Italian cities as well as in
other Catholic countries of Eur
ope and the New World with the
hope of strengthening and estab
lishing by cruel means the
waning prestige of the Catholic
church.
But the saintly, ascetic Molko
becomes a mere man of flesh and
blood with normal sexual feeling
when he is seduced by the fam
ous, beautiful, and talented Tul-
lia D’Aragona. This incident
makes him into a believable
human being.
The Chosen One by Harry Si
monhoff is a good historical ro
mance and should be in every
Jewish home.
