MY INNING WITH
SANDY KOUFAX
As a long standing, bleacher
sitting, baseball fan, my interest
stretches to any pitcher in the
majors. To an award-winner and
record-setter goes all my sports
awe—to a Jewish star, on top
of that, like Sandy Koufax —
well gosh!
So when news came that Kou
fax was going to be in our town
for an award dinner on behalf
of the Levi Memorial Arthritis
Hospital in Hot Springs, Ark., I
set my sights higher than left
field fence and started maneuver
ing to wangle a personal inter
view.
Like I’d figured, the official
press conference was centered
mostly on the sports angle. (Ru
mors had preceded his entrance
... he had the flu, was sleep
ing, hadn’t wanted a press con
ference . . . might not come, etc.)
Then Sandy walked in, twice as
handsome as photographs . . .
sharply decked out in a dark gray
hard-finish suit, dark red tie
with a t'ny onyx tie-tack, and
mirror-bright alligator loafers.
And where do you think he sat?
Right smack dab across the table
from me. Even drew a laugh
when the intros came around to
me . . . “Well, you’re a different
looking sportswriter, anyway.”
So I’m not a sportswriter! Arty
way, there were more personal
things Koffee Klatch wanted to
know from Sandy. Mainly, how
about his not playing on Yom
Kippur? This feature of the great
pitcher had been written up in
the papers extensively. I’d been
so proud (you, too, I’m sure) to
read of this determination, that
I wondered—was this a hard de
cision for Sandy to come to?
Soon as the sports columnists,
T-V men and wire service re
porters hurried out to meet their
desd'mes T got the nod for my
private chat.
Somebody as warm and friend
ly as Sandv almost seems like a
personal friend, so I didn’t hesi
tate to start off on a first name
basis.
Me (for openers): “Sandy,
what about your decision” etc.
Sandy: “Actually, it wasn't a
hard decision at all. The decision
was made 11 years ago. I’ve
never played on Yom Kippur,
but there just d : dn’t seem to be
anv point >'n making a big deal
about it. An announcement three
weeks ahead of t ; me. before we
even knew if we’d be playing in
the Series, would have been silly.
Somehow the whole thing got
blown up in the newspapers.”
The matter-of-faotness with
which he discussed this was im
pressive. To Sandy, there wasn’t
a thing unusual about the star
pitcher of the champion Dodgers
giving up his turn on the mound
for the Jewish Holy Day. In his
mind, it couldn’t have been oth
erwise.
Me: “Was there any pressure
put on by management or team
mates to pet you to pitch?”
Sandy: “No, none at all.”
Which proved my point. I
think most people respect your
beliefs if you are firm in them.
Surely, at the beginning of his
athletic career, this good-looking
Jewish boy could have had little
idea of the meteoric stardom
awaiting him. But whatever else
it has meant to hirn, obviously it
has not impaired his strong feel
ings for his religion. Is this typ
ical, I wondered?
Me: “Do ball players in gen
eral tend to be somewhat religi
ous?”
Sandy: “Well, you’ve got to be
lieve in something!”
“To believe in something ...”
As my car inched homeward
along the bumper-to-bumper ex
pressway, I recalled his words.
■If nothing else, my all-too-
brief inning with Sandy had im
pressed me with this thought.
He believes in something. And
when he. does, he automatically
announces it to the world by his
every act.
For myself, I believe in, among
other things, the kind of sports
manship tempered with humil
ity, strength, charity and religi
ous conviction exemplified by
Sandy Koufax.
I believe in the kind of cour
age he stands for—the courage
of his convictions. cl966
