Susan and Donald Melvin of
New York City, niece and neph
ew of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin M.
Tenenbaum of Atlanta, are now
in Montgomery with the movie
production cast of Truman Ca
pote’s “A Christmas Memory.”
The motion picture is being pro
duced by Frank Perry, who also
produced “David and Lisa” and
“Ladybug, Ladybug." Susan and
Donnie also appeared in the lat
ter production and received good
notices for their performances
from the New York critics.

Friends of Sam Rothberg, of
Atlanta, will regret to learn of
his confinement at St. Joseph
Hospital due to a bone injury.

Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence J.
Silverstein of San Francisco an
nounce the birth of a daughter,
Amy Lynn, on February 6. Mrs.’
Silverstein is the former Joan
Taratoot, daughter of Mr and
Mrs. Abe Taratoot of Atlanta.
Paternal grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Merwyn J. Silverstein
of San Francisco. Mrs. H. Tara
toot is the maternal great-grand
father and Mr. and Mrs. David
A. Klein of San Francisco are the
paternal great-grandparents. Mrs.
Abe Taratoot has been in San
Francisco to welcome her new
granddaughter.
OPERA-ATLANTA
OPENS SEASON
The newly formed opera com
pany, Opera-Atlanta, was to open
its premier season on February
24 and 25 at the Westminster
Schools Auditorium.
The entire Atlanta Symphony
and an Atlanta cast under the di
rection of Robert Lawrence of
New York were to present two
one-act operas each evening.
They are “La Navarraise” by
Massenet and “Gianni Schicchi”
by Puccini.
It is hoped that Opera-Atlanta,
with the backing of the Atlanta
Music Club, Opera Guild, Junior
League, Music Festival, Assn. Arts
Alliance, High Museum of Art,
Pocket Theatre and Westminster
Schools, will become a perman
ent part of Atlanta’s musical
scene.
Future seasons will be held
under the auspices of the Atlan
ta Arts Alliance and the Symph
ony at the Cultural Center when
the Center is completed.
Halpern Bar Mitzvah
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Halpern of
Atlanta cordially invite relatives
and friends to the Bar Mitzvah

birth of a daughter, Elizabeth
Anne, on February 10. Mrs.
Buchsbaum is the former Esther
Rosenbaum of Atlanta. Grand

Pioneer Women /
To Mark Purim
Pioneer Women Club 1 will
hold its annual Purim celebra
tion at 1:30 p. m., Wednesday,
March 9, at Shearith Israel Syn
agogue in the library.
A Queen Esther will be picked
and prizes will be awarded for
costumes and talent.
Persons who can sing or en
tertain are invited to participate
in the program and may call Mrs.
Ida Goncher, TR. 5-6123, or Mrs.
Davis, TR. 2-1634, for informa
tion.
Traditional Hamantaschen will
be served.
Temple
Sisterhoods
Donor Lunch
Members of the Temple Sister
hood will preview spring at 12
noon, Wednesday, March 2, with
the annual donor luncheon. This
is the Sisterhood’s only fund
raising event. The theme will be
“Come Fly With Me.”
High spot of the occasion will
be a fashion show presented by
Rich’s and commentated by Sol
Kent. Mrs. Raymond Feig, vice
president in charge, said, “Mr.
Kent is being extremely reticent
about the clothes he will feature,
only smiling mysteriously and
saying ‘Wait and see’.”
A Sherry Hour for sponsors in
the Temple Library will procede
the luncheon, according to spon
sor chairmen Mrs. Mendel Romm
Jr. and Mrs. Milton Romm. The
gourmet menu is another well-
kept secret, but arrangements
chairman Mrs. W. B. Schwartz
Jr. vows it will be delicious
enough to convince members to
forego calorie counting for just
one afternoon.
Th ; s is the first time in many
years that the luncheon will be
held in the Temple’s Friendship
Hall. Mrs. Bernard M. Tesler and
Mrs. Siegfried Guthman Jr. have
designed special centerpieces for
each table from spring flowers
and vari-colored balloons.

William Weiller, general solici
tation; Mrs. Sol Blaine, new
members; Mrs. Howard Baer,
secretary; Mrs. Lewis Holland,
treasurer; Mrs. Joel Goldberg

Barry Sherman, publicity; Mrs.
Walter Rice, invitations. Mrs. I.
Shlesinger is donor luncheon
chairman and Mrs. Fred Beer-
man is president of the Sister
hood.
Funds raised at this luncheon
are used to support the many
projects which Sisterhood spon
sors throughout the year. The
Annual Interfaith Institute, to
which all area church-women
are invited, and Service to the
Blind are but two of the pro
grams in which members partici
pate. Some of their other activ
ities include providing entertain
ment for residents of the Jewish
Home for the Aged, Armed
Forces Hospitality, holiday pro
grams for Temple’s religious
school students, floral arrange
ments for the alter, Friday even
ing Oneg Shabbats, programs for
Temple Teens and Youth Group
and partial campships for des
erving children.
True Sisters
To Aid Retarded
United Order True Sisters has
expanded its services to include
programs for the children at the
Fairhaven School for Retarded
Children.
A party will be given for sev
eral classes at Fairhaven School
at 1:30 p. m., Monday. Feb. 28.
Members interested in helping
with the project are asked to con
tact Mrs. Mannie Silberstein, Mrs.
Mack Frankel or Mrs. Ethel Kess
ler.
The organization also sponsor
ed a bingo game at the Jewish
Home for the Aged on February
23. Mrs. Louis Vrono was in
charge.
Tartuffe Next at
Academu Theatre
Moliere’s “Tartuffe’ ’is the cur
rent attraction at the Academy
Theatre.
A hilarious and colorful cos
tumed comedy, “Tartuffe” was
first produced in 1669 on the
French stage with Moliere taking
the title role himself. The play
was promptly banned for five
years because the public was of
fended by what it considered
warped views on religion.
Today, the play is considered
a classical gem of satire, revolv
ing around one Tartuffe, a poseur
of religious bent, who invades a
nobleman’s home and proceeds
to take over . . . house, purse,
family and all.
The play will run through
March 24. Reservations can be
made by calling 233-9481.

Cantorial Great In Concert

United Synagogue of America.
These concerts are held in differ

daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Schwartzberg of Lenox Rd.,
Atlanta.

scholarships for future cantors,
for the publication of synagogue
music and to support the Can
tors Institute in New York.
Also appearing in the afternoon
concert will be such renowed

Benjamin Siegel of New York
and Moshe Taube of Pittsburgh.
Cantor Goodfriend indicated
the possibility of a performance
of “Cantors in Concert” in At
lanta at a future date.

Sisterhood's
Purim Fete
Ahavath Achim Sisterhood will
celebrate Purim with a luncheon
meeting on Monday, March 7, at
12 o’clock noon in Paradies Hall
of the Synagogue.
' Guest speaker will be Theodore
Freedman, Southern Director of
the Anti-Defamation League,
who will present a timely discus
sion on the ‘Church Versus State
for Your Child’s Religious Educa
tion.”
Mr. Freedman supervises the
activities of the seven Southern
offices of the ADL. One of his
major interests is in the area of
Intergroup Relations training for
Teacher-Candidates in schools of
education. In this capacity he has
served on the faculty, lectured
and provided consultation at a
number of major colleges and
universities.
Mrs. Alvin Halpern, Sisterhood
president, urges all members to
attend this provocative and en
joyable Purim meeting.
