Rabbi Joel Geffen
Honored in New York
NEW YORK — A testimonial
dinner was given in honor of
Rabbi Joel S. Geffen upon his
completion of 10 years as direc
tor of the New York Metropol
itan Region of the United Syna
gogue of America, Sunday even
ing, February 13, lay the officers
and executive committee of the
Region, it was announced by Ar
thur J. Levine, regional presi
dent.
Among the participants in the
program were: Rabbi Bernard
Mandelbaum, provost of the Jew
ish Theological Seminary; Rabbi
Bernard Segal, executive director
of the United Synagogue; Rabbi

year-old father of Rabbi Geffen,
participated in the program
through a recorded message for
the occasion.
A program of Hebrew music
was presented by the United Syn
agogue Youth Choral Ensemble
of the Metropolitan New York
Region, directed by Cantor Ralph
Schlossberg of New York City.
Rabbi Geffen was presented
B'nai B'rith Chairman
Maurice N. Weinsteia
Maurice N. Weinstein of Charlotte, N. C,
has been elected to a three year term a;
chairman ot the B’nai B'rith Internation
al Council, succeeding Label A. Katz ot
New Orleans. The Council coordinates
the organization’s activities in 43 court
tries. Mr Weinstein is a past vice presr
dent ot B'nai B'rith and the origmatoi
ot its adult Jewish education program
with a plaque inscribed to him
as a tribute for his 10 years of
leadership in the region.
Rabbi Nahum Cohen has been
designated acting director of the
Region, succeeding Rabbi Geffen.
Rabbi Geffen will be devoting
full-time to the directorship of
the Department of Field Activ
ities and Community Education
of the Jewish Theological Sem
inary. He also serves as spiritual
advisor of the National Federa
tion of Jewish Men’s Clubs.

reelected him for a fourth term
as vice mayor. He finds time as
well for his family and for such
activities as selling Israel bonds,
working for the UJA, counseling
the Heart Association of Georgia
and being a director for the blind
light house for the state.
Barron Directs
Foundation for
Jewish Culture
NEW YORK (JTA)—Harry I.
Barron has been named execu
tive director of the National
Foundation for Jewish Culture.
He has served as executive direc
tor of the Jewish Welfare Fed
eration of New Orleans for the
past decade. He succeeds Dr.
Judah J. Shapiro, who now
serves as a consultant to the
foundation.
The foundation was establish
ed in 1959 as a result of action
taken bv the General Assembly
of the Council of Jewish Federa
tions and Welfare Funds. It pro
vides assistance, guidance and
supDort to Jewish agencies and
institutions in the field of Jewish
culture, initiates and finances
projects and advises local com
munities in Jewish culture.
