TRENTON (JTA)—New Jersey
state investigators opened a
formal investigation into charges
that an ultra-Conservative ele
ment in the New Jersey Young
Republicans sponsored alleged
anti-Semitic, racist and extrem
ist activities.
The probe was launched by
State Attorney General Arthur
J. Sills and was accompanied by
fresh charges against the “Rat
Finks” as members of the fac
tion call themselves, by State
Senator Nelson F. Stamler, an
independent Republican. Sen.
Stamler, who had aired a charge
that the faction had sung an anti-
Semitic song at state and na
tional Young Republican con
ventions last summer, accused
the faction of systematically dis
couraging Jews and Negroes
from joining the Young Repub
licans. Mr. Sills said that the re
ported singing of such songs
might constitute “discriminatory
proceedings” in violation of state
civil rights laws.
Sen. Stamler had asserted that
the anti-Semitic and racist songs
were published in a seven-page
eong sheet used in the “sing
alongs.” Sen. Stamler said that
he knew of a number of Jews
who had applied for membership
in Young Republican county
units and who had been “harass
ed” by Rat Fink adherents until
they stopped coming to meetings.
Mr. Stamler, the only Jewish
Republican in the New Jersey
Legislature, said one Rat Fink
technique was to subject Jewish
applicants to hostile questioning,
and then to seat them apart from
the membership.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A
West German arms firm which
has persistently refused to con
sider even token compensation
to concentration camp inmates
exploited as slave laborers dur
ing World War II is being fav
orably considered by the U. S.
Defense Department for a con
tract to manufacture guns for
the United States, causing pro
tests by international president
William A. Wexler, of B’nai
B’rith, it was revealed here last
weekend.
The circumstances, which could
lead to a $75,000,000 contract for
Rheinmetall Company, of Dus-
seldorf, were disclosed in protests
by Dr. Wexler to Secretary of
State Dean Rusk and Secretary
of Defense Robert S. McNamara,
Dr. Wexler said his organiza
tion “deeply deplores the possi
bility that Rheinmetall, second
largest arms manufacturer for
the Nazi Reich, would be re
warded with a favorable con
tract, notwithstanding stubborn
refusals “to recognize moral ob
ligations to some 1,000 survivors
of slave labor who were brutal
ly exploited.” A similar protest
has been made by Mayor John
V. Ryan, Jr., of Springfield,
Mass., in a communication to
President Johnson.
Many of the survivors of the
group exploited by Rheinmetall
are now U. S. citizens. Efforts
by Jewish organizations to ne
gotiate agreement with Rhein
metall proved futile, although
the Nuremberg Tribunal had
ruled that Nazi exploiters of
slave labor like Rheinmetall per
petrated a crime against human
ity, and were legally responsi
ble.
A German high court decision
was subsequently made against
Rheinmetall. The plaintiffs were
two Jewish women now living in
New York. But these claims were
deferred until a final peace trea
ty. Such a treaty is unlikely at
present because of Soviet policies.
Agreement to compensate vic
tims was made by Krupp, I. G.
Farben and other German com
panies, but the alleged ex-Nazi

ALBANY (JTA)— A humane
slaughter bill that had come
under heavy fire from Jewish or
ganizations in the State was
withdrawn by its sponsor in the
New York Legislature.
Another bill, which remains on
the legislative calendar, has been
called unobjectionable by Orth
odox, Conservative and Reform
rabbinic associations, national
congregational bodies of Conserv
atism and Refofm and major
Jewish civic organizations.

Party members who direct Rhein
metall have adamantly refused
to even consider the matter. They
are Otto Paul Caesar and Ernst
Blume.
Dr. Wexler protested that such
dealings with an alleged Nazi
firm undermines American dec
larations on behalf of human
rights. The matter has also been
discussed, with West German
Ambassador Heinrich Knappstein.
The Mayor of Springfield is in
terested in the issue because an
old arsenal in his city has been
closed down. He told the Pres
ident that the Springfield facil
ity could produce the same wea
pons for which a contract is being
awarded to a firm managed by
two “pioneer Nazis.”
