THE SOCfHERN I8KAILITI
OFF THE RECORD by Nathan Ziprin
Conversation With
When I arrived to interview
Hadassah president Mrs. Morti
mer Jacobson, I came armed with
a factual profile of the organiza
tion’s image so that it wouldn’t
be necessary to go into burden
some details about its activities.
I had known from past inter
view experience that the lady
too might be tempted to convey
an image of her organization
through pertinent facts and fig
ures. It was my determination to
divert her from that temptation
so that we might get to the very
essence of this visit.
What makes your women tick,
who are they and where do they
come from and why? I asked.
This was a large order. But the
charming lady- acquitted herself
excellently.
“I will give you my interpre
tation and my impressions,” she
proceeded with a' 'meaningful
smile on her face. ‘‘The interest
ing thing about Hadassah is that
we have the same kind of loyal
ty and devotion from the mem
ber who comes from near as
from far. Why? Obviously be
cause we strike some responsive
chord in Jewish women. Basical
ly all of us want to be associated
with something which we think
will live on after us. We all strive
to leave something that will live
beyond us. In an organization
such as Hadassah, the work on
behalf of Israel gives them the
feeling that they are helping to
write current Jewish histtffy. If
we were just talkers or we were

just people who talked philos
ophy, I don’t think it would be
half as meaningful to them as
when they see concrete ev
idence.” As an example she cited
the fact that when Hadassah
women “talk about Youth Aliyah
they know that over 100,000 chil
dren are living today in Israel
who got their start through our
efforts. They know this repres
ents a page in Israel’s history.
They know that the Hadassah
Hebrew University Medical Cen
ter has already helped Israel to
achieve a position of fame in the
medical world, and they are
proud they played a role in ac
complishing this. This is some
thing that Hadassah has given
them—a chance to be part of a
dynamic, creative endeavor,”
Before proceeding to the next
question, I observed it would ap
pear that one of the things that
motivates Hadassah women is a
sense of virtual self-involvement
in the building of Israel. When
I received a smiling assent, I
probed further. “Do you think,”
I asked her, “that one of the
things that makes these women
tick is the feeling that through
belonging to Hadassah they bring
Jewish content into their homes,
that Hadassah to them is a me
dium of bringing Jewish values
to their environs, and that their
dedication to the organization is
not wholly motivated by concern
for Hadassah’s programs but only
perhaps as they serve as effective
instruments in furthering their
Jewish living?”
Mrs. Jacobson was quick to
agree with my speculation. By
way of illustrating Hadassah’s
educational impact on its mem
bers. she remarked that many of
the younger members came from
homes where they had little of

realistic to expect that large
numbers of Americans will go to

orable atmosphere so’ that young
people express a desire to go.
We should be encouraging — or
helpful. Americans are not going
to come in large numbers. The
social qualities of American de
mocracy have too great a hold on
us and only those people who feel
they can really make a contribu
tion to life in Israel will go. This
will be the motivating factor.”
In reply to a question whether
she didn’t think that the lack of
migration to Israel on the part of
American youth was largely due
to the lack of example set by
Zionist leadership and other Is
raeli enthusiasts, Mrs. Jacobson
said this was only “partially" so
since it is a truism that youth
does not follow leaders.
As to Hadassah’s programs in
the next ten years, Mrs. Jacobson
said she was convinced Hadas
sah’s Medical Center in Israel
was destined for huge strides,
surpassing everything in the past.
She said her organization was
proud of its medical efforts in
Israel even though “there is no
limit to what can be accomplish
ed” but “our job is to keep going
forward, and to keep pace with
the needs and the opportunities.”
She also foresaw pressure on Ha
dassah for greater efforts in the
field of secondary education in
Israel.
Bom in New York of a Zion
ist family, Mrs. Jacobson views
participation in the Zionist move
ment as one of the great mo
ments in her life. Since 1951,
when she was elected to the na
tional board of Hadassah, Mrs.
Jacobson has been one of the or
ganization’s most active mem
bers. Her first visit to Israel was
in 1951 and since then she has
made countless trips. In 1951,
1956, 1960 and 1964 she attended
the World Zionist Congress as a
delegate of her organization.
Married for 27 years, Mrs. Ja
cobson met her husband while
they were both engaged in youth
work as members of Young Is
rael and both of them are mem
bers of the Mosholu Jewish Cen
ter in the Bronx.
I did not ask the lady in what
Hadassah age bracket she belong
ed (the Hadassah age figure is
25 to 54). If I did she probably
would have replied she was too
busy with her work to count
years. And indeed she is, this
woman of charm, excellent car
riage, and contagious dynamism.
