“Judith,” undoubtedly one of
the best feature films yet to hit
the screen portraying the Jewish
struggle for statehood, had its
premiere January 20 at New
York’s Radio City Music Hall. In
many ways—acting, photography,
dynamism and realism — it far
excels “Exodus.”
The story of the Kurt Unger
Paramount production, filmed in
Israel, revolves around the most
critical period In the battle for
Jewish sovereignty, the year 1948
which witnessed the end of the
British Mandate and the begin
ning of Israeli independence.
Palestine was a powder-keg.
The UN had voted for Partition
and the Third Hebrew Common
wealth was about to be born. The
leaders of the fledgling country
and the valiant handful of under
ground fighters realized that once
the British departed, the new
state would be attacked by the
murderous armies of the six sur
rounding Arab neighbors.
Helping these armies prepare
for the invasion were several
former Nazi officers, among them
General Gustave Schiller who
had been a tank expert in Hit
ler’s Afrika Corps and who was
wanted by the Allies for tnal as
a war criminal- Tlx* Israelis

of concentration camp intern
ment, but she had lost her child.
Having come through it all, she
had only one purpose in life: to
seek out Schiller and kill him.
Since Judith was the only per
son who could identify the Nazi

Aaron Stein (Peter Finch), il
legally smuggled her into Pal
estine from Europe. They took
her to the Gates of Galilee kib
butz where she is put to work
until they can pick up her ex-

Impatient to attain her goal of
revenge, Judith refuses to take

quite a problem for Aaron. But

the area, Major Lawton (Jack
Hawkins) opens the door to her
—and to the Israeli underground
whose members manage to use
her as a bait to lure Schiller
(Hans Vemer) into a trap which
was set in Damascus.
The story continues to move
along in several thrilling sequ
ences culminating in a massive
Arab attack on the kibbutz where
Schiller is held a prisoner and
where he finally reluctantly tells
Judith exactly at what point the
major Arab onslaught will start.
The entire film has been mas
terfully directed by Daniel Mann
and the acting by everyone con
cerned is superb. Loren especially
is perfect in her role as a Jewish
concentration camp escapee. And
Peter Finch makes a very con
vincing underg round leader.
Playing vital roles are a number
of outstanding Israelis: Zaharira
Charifai, as Doctor Rachel; Shra-
ga Friedman, as Nathan; Zippo-
rah Peled, as Hannah; Joseph
Gross; Gilad Constantiner; Sho-
shana Bamea; Alexander Yaha-
lomi, in addition to some 3,000
extras from neighboring kibbut
zim and the Israeli Army.
If you want to project your-
■elf back to the year 1948 and
how the heroic handful of
British on their
drove back the Arabs and
what life really was like then in
a beleaguered kibbutz, by all
means go and see Judith. Don’t
miss it. John Michael Hayes and
Lawrence Durrell have given us
a great screenplay.
