Koffee Klatch
by VIDA
GOLDGAR
A column or so ago, I under
took in Koffee Klateh to give my
thoughts on a current problem
being studied by many Jewish
communities: Whether or not
Jewish Community Centers
should maintain an Open-Sab
bath policy. Readers may recall,
I was in favor of such a policy
for a variety of reasons.
Comments, both pro and con,
have been coming in. One letter,
forwarded from Kansas City,
came from a young woman whose
views impressed me enough to

want to share them with my
readers. She wrote:
“Yes, indeed, what better place
for Jewish youngsters to be on a
Sabbath day than among their
friends under the roof of a Jew
ish establishment! Yes, the Jew
ish community centers are losing
too much of their potential value
by closing on Saturday. But Vida
Goldgar’s column makes no men
tion of the real problem, which
is that, in a majority of cases
the Jewish Center, which may be
quite adequate as a center, does
pitifully little to merit the name
'‘Jewish!" This is most deplora
bly true in the case of center
programs offered to children and
youth
“There exists no precept of
Orthodox Judaism which pro
hibits the meeting of young Jews
on a Sabbath day within the fa
cilities of a Jewish center. But,
at least on this one day, let the
centers offer a program rich in
Jewish content, appropriate to the
Sabbath day and not violating its
proper observance. Swimming,
sports, arts and social-dancing
activities are all very well dur
ing the week, but not on the
Sabbath Day. Certainly we want
our Jewish youngsters to be to
gether, but together for what
purpose? The Sabbath can be a
time for discovering common
Jewish interests in addition to
common general interests. Dra
matics, folk singing and dancing,
games, story-telling, panels, dis
cussions and study sessions are
but a few of the areas which can
be explored in order to provide
an interesting and popular pro
gram for the youngsters. No, such
a program will not be as immed
iately popular as the usual fare,
but shall not the centers be an
educative force as well as ac-
commodators of the status quo in
tastes?
“In long-range terms, young
sters respond well to any pro
gram which is presented in in
teresting and varied forms.
Another problem that will cer
tainly arise is that the vast ma
jority of the “Jewish” center per
sonnel are unfortunately not
qualified to create or administer
a program strong in Jewish con
tent. Why cannot a second staff
then relieve the week-day staff,
as Miss Goldgar herself suggests,
and implement the Sabbath pro
gram? Materials for such a pro
gram can certainly pose no prob
lem—a literal wealth of Jewish
culture has hitherto been unex
plored in the framework of Jew
ish center programming.
“To merely encourage our
children to be among other Jew
ish children because both hap
pened to be born of Jewish par
ents, is not, after all, much of
an improvement over the Satur
day matinee of Thunderball. If
the Jewish centers will but dare
to be deserving of their name, the
open-Sabbath policy can gain
only the approval of all elements
of the Jewish community.”
