Workmen’s Circle Branch 1015
To Celebrate 15th Anniversary
On Saturday evening, March
26, Workmen’s Circle Branch
1015 will celebrate its fifteenth
anniversary.
The festivities will take place
in the International Sky Room of
the Dinkier Plaza Hotel consist
ing of a banquet and dance.
Judge Jacob T. Zukerman, na
tional president‘of the Workmen’s
Circle, will be the featured
speaker of the evening.
One of the highlights of the
evening will be the presentation
of an award to Workmen's Circle
Branch 1015 from the U. S. In
formation Agency on behalf of
the government’s “People To Peo
ple Friendship Program’’ by Ben
jamin R. Stickney, program di
rector of the USIA.
Branch 1015, chartered in April
of 1951, immediately involved it
self in all facets of Jewish and
general community life. In 1951
the Workmen’s Circle branches
of Atlanta maintained an l.L.
Peretz Yiddish School. The mem
bership of the branch actively in
volved itself financially and phy
sically in supporting and main-

taining the continuity of Jewish
education in Atlanta. It is to the
credit of the Workmen’s Circle
that a number of Atlanta’s most
outstanding community leaders
received their Jewish education
and indoctrination as pupils in
the Atlanta Arbeter Ring Shule.
The Workmen’s Circle branches
of Atlanta and around the coun
try are proud of their title as
“The Red Cross of the Labor
Movement.” In the early 1930’s
when the needle trades in New
York were on the verge of finan
cial bankruptcy and communist
infiltration, it was the Workmen’s
Circle that raised the necessary
money and manpower to sustain
them in their struggle. This al
liance between the Workmen’s
Circle and the trade union move
ment has continued through the
years and has been of immeas
urable help to Jewish commun
ities in their fight against anti
semitism and human exploitation.
Because of their close ties it was
possible to receive the active sup
port of the International Labor
movement for the votes so nec
essary for the admission of Is
rael to the UN. The financial, po
litical and moral support that or
ganized labor has given to the
State of Israel since its inception
is one of its proudest accomplish
ments in its long history of
championing the cause of de
mocracy throughout the world.
On the local scene, the Atlanta
branches of the Workmen's Cir
cle have always supported friends
in the trade union movement.
After World War II the Yid
dish speaking branches of At
lanta helped finance the B. Char-
ne.v Vladek Home for Orphans in
Paris. One of the first projects
of E. S. Branch 1015 was to adopt
and support two orphans in co
operation with Branches 207 and
207B. This was an annual project
and continued from 1951 through
1963, when the need for a war
orphans home no longer existed.
The fight against dreaded dis
eases was waged by Branch 1015
through the Beverly Alperin
Memorial Fund by grants to Em
ory University and Grady hospi
tal for research in leukemia.
Another and more recent project
of Branch 1015 has been the for-

In the field of civil and human
rights the Workmen’s Circle was
active in the formation of HOPE
and one of few Jewish organi
zations to appear before the Sib
ley Committee, expressing their
point of view in favor of equal
education for all Georgia citizens.
Their participation in the Medgar
Evers Memorial, the Selma Civil
Rights March and Washington
demonstration is a result of their
continued affirmative approach
to the problem of gaining equal
rights for all. The Workmen’s
Circle from its inception has
been an opponent of all forms of
totalitarianism, whether fascist or
communist or as they are known
by their more popular cliche, the
extreme left arid right. Knowing
that totalitarism in the breed
ing ground for anti-semitism,
the Workmen’s Circle and Jewish
Labor Committee were one of the
first (as early as 1946-7), to il
luminate the fact that the Soviet
Union had embarked upon a
course of exterminating Jewish
life, culture and religion behind
the iron curtain.
In a more positive approach to
the battle for the minds of men
being waged throughout the
world. Workmen’s Circle Branch
1015 in cooperation with the
U. S. Information Agency, in
augurated two successful com
munity drives in behalf of our
government’s “People To People
Friendship Program.” The first
drive, under the chairmanship of
Dr. Donald C. Agnew, then pres
ident of Oglethorpe University,
was responsible for the collection
and shipment of over 20,000 good
hooks to USIA libraries and
centers around the world. The
“Greater Atlanta Books Abroad
Drive" was the pilot program
launchetd by the USIA and
its success in Atlanta was respon
sible for similar successful drives
throughout the country. As a
result of ifs initial success in
People To People programming,
the Atlanta branches of the
Workmen’s Circle were invited
once again, in 1963, by the USIA
to involve Atlanta as a pilot pro
gram city. This time on behalf
of “The JFK Sports Kits Pro
gram.” With Coach Bobby Dodd
as their chairman the “Greater
Atlanta JFK Sports Kits Com
mittee” conducted a most success
ful drive. To this day Atlantans
that participated are recipients of
letters of thanks from children
and organizations throughout the
world.
In 1964 the Southern District
branches of the Workmen's Circle
embarked upon a project to build
a children’s health center in Is
rael for economically depressed
families. In a period of two years.
$40,000 was raised and the Cen
ter today is a reality that services
over 200 children annually. On a
national scale Workmen’s Circle
branches have purchased over
$4,000,000 in Israeli bonds.
Distinctive features of Work
men's Circle membership include
many and varied local benefits.
In Atlanta, members enjoy the
protection of an excellent Local
Group Doctors Plan. In addition
to this, a low cost Major Hospi
talization Plan is also available to
members and their families.
