The Jewish educational struc

With the various seminaries and

dearth of Hebrew teachers will
be grave before this decade is

The death of Rabbi Adler in
Detroit at the hands of a madman
who later died of a self-inflicted
wound has shocked the Jewish
community to its roots. One of
the most painful byproducts of
the Detroit tragedy has been the
way some newspapers covered
the event. One Negro publication
hailed the gun-toter as a hero
who lived among Negroes and
whose act was a protest against
Jews who exploited Negroes . . .

Silver Lining
DR SAMUEL SILVER
(A Seven Arts Feature
How would like it if your par
ents had told you, when you were
five years old, to drop dead?
That’s what happened to Myer
Rubinstein, who
was born near
the turn of the
century in a lit
tle Rinnan i a n
town called Husi.
The lad was s'
hurt that he lost
the power of
fluent speech. As
soon as possible
he ran away
from h o m e .
Handicapped by
his stammer and his poverty, he
had to make out on his own.
He did make out, and superbly.
Displaying unbelievable intrepid
ity and indomitability, Ruben-
stein learned how to be a black
smith, then a winery worker, and
later an engineer.
The fascinating chronicle of his
life is one of the most gr pp ng
books you can read. Entitled
‘ ’ S h t i mmer: The Boy Who
Couldn’t Talk,” Rubenstein, new
Robert Myers, tells in his book
how he went from job to job,
trom Husi to Bucharest, to New
York, Rochester, Baltimore, and
ultimately to Venice, California,
exercising his ingenuity, facing
all kinds of hardship and adver
sity, but pers sting in his efforts
to make something of himself,
and ultimately becoming a tech
nician in the field of nuclear re
search.
Written almost in diary form,
the book lacks literary polish but
it is a compelling scenario of the
life of the immigrant, the handi
caps in his way, the exploitation
he endured and the triumph over
these obstacles. Myers had
domestic troubles, too, but he
managed able to conquer them.
In the course of the autobio
graphy we are given heart-warm
ing glimpses of the late Rabbi
Stephen Wise who befriended
Myers when he was victimized
by financial straits and bigotry.
Inspiring is the manner in
which Myers stood up against
those who sought to wrong him
because of his Jewishness or IPs
lack of education. Few books
capture so well the drama of the
resolute immigrant who insists
upon being treated in accordance
with the promise of America.
