rington, President of the Friends
of Animals, Inc. Because of her
stand against hoisting and shack
ling but fully in favor of the
Orthodox sheehita as performed
in Israel and due to a misrepres-
„ entation of some of her state
ments, she has been charged by
some as being anti-Semitic.
Mrs. Herrington, an idealist
who is devoting her time to the
humane treatment of all animals,
made the case of her organiza
tion quite clear. During the inter
view she told your correspondent
that "Friends of Animals, Inc.,”
is against the' barbaric pack-
h ' : st m’ c( ns"ious animals to pos
ition them for slaughter. The
proposed leg ; slation to ban this
method.” she stated, “leaves un
touched any religious ritual con
nected with slaughter. The bills
we support—among which is the
Willard Humane Slaughter bill
as emended to include lambs and
calves—specifically define shech-
ita. Jewish ritual slaughter, as
humane.”
Deelarng that “the elimination
of shnckbng and hojstmg stops
unnecessary suffern" thus com
plying with the biblical injunc-
tion agamst causing pain to an
imals.” Mrs. H°rr ; ngton cited Is
rael's ban on the ‘import of V. S.
kosher meat that has been proc
essor! bv the shacking and
hoisting method’ as “proof that
such a method violates Jewish
religious principles.”
"It is very unfortunate." she
added, "that s"me Orthodox mb
ps who should be in the fore
front of th’s humane movement
pro vohrmontlv cpn-s-'d to the
legislation. To defeat it. they use
such unsavoury tactics as charg
ing legislators and our organiza
tion w ; th anti-Semitism . . . Such
charges and similar nvsrppresen-
tafion render our efforts on be
half of the animals difficult, but
we shall not be deterred from
accomplishing our human objec
tives.”
Mrs. Herrington told the writer
that she is presently working
hard for the Willard bill to which
ten outstanding Jewish organiza
tions have "shown no objection
whatsover,” she said. These in
clude: the Rabbinical Council of
America; the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations; the Jew
ish Labor Committee; the United
Synagogue of America; the Rab
binical Assembly; the ADL of
B’nai B’rith; the Jewish War Vet
erans; the Central Conference of
American Rabbis, and the Na
tional Council of Jewish Women.
Among those who have come
out in support of Mrs. Herring
ton is the noted New York Jew
ish physician, Dr. M. I 1 Salomon,
a former professor of physiology
at the University of Cochabamba
in Bolivia. Also, the renowned
Orthodox leader of Boston, Rabbi
Joseph B. Soloveitchik, has given
his religious approval of a mech-
inical positioning device for
steers.
Mrs. Alice Herrington, whose
home state is Wisconsin, express
ed full confidence that the Jew
ish people, “to whom the tradi
tions of kindness to animals have
profound meaning, will give their
full support to human slaughter
legislation once they learn of the
horrors perpet rated in our
slaughterhouses. The legislation,”
she concluded, "would also end
the horrible practice of bludgeon
ing animals with pole axes and
sledge hammers now used to ren
der them unconscious in non-
kosher slaughterhouses.”
