TYRANTS VS. FAITH
Egyptians had smothered a nation in chain,
And stifled a spirit in which hope had lain.
But might could not save them and so they were slain
By hundreds and thousands from palace to plain.
HOLY AND MERCIFUL ART THOU. O LORD.
SMITE DOWN THY FOES WITH THY DREADFUL SWORD.
Assyrian wolves were hounding the gate.
Their circling fires were seen early and late.
Their campaigns were colored with murder and hate;
So much the more awful was their final fate.
»
HOLY AND MERCIFUL ART THOU. O LORD.
SMITE DOWN THY FOES WITH THY DREADFUL SWORD.
Germany had heaped up mountains of dead,
Laid to rest millions in a lime-filled bed.
Filled all the world with loathing and dread,
‘Til millions of bombs rained down on its head-
HOLY AND MERCIFUL ART THOU. O LORD.
SMITE DOWN THY FOES WITH THY DREADFUL SWORD.
Many are tyrannies now past and gone
And more are to come that have still to be drawn.
Black years will pass ‘til again comes the dawn,
Nations may die but belief lives on.
HOLY AND MERCIFUL ART THOU, O LORD.
SMITE DOWN THY FOES WITH THY DREADFUL SWORD.
