NEW YORK (JTA) — About
12,000 New York Jewish youths
have marched through the streets
of midtown Manhattan in a Pass-
over youth protest on behalf of
Soviet Jewry. The youths were
accompanied in their protest
march by a number of congress
men, state senators and assem
blymen. Carrying banners and
posters, the students who repre
sented 22 Jewish youth organiza
tions, marched 25 blocks in a
symbolic encirclement of the So
viet U. N. Mission and to the
United Nations. The march took
place last Friday.
Later, at a mass rally in the
shadow of the United Nations,
the youths heard Sen. Jacob M.
Javits, New York Republican,
tell them: “We do and we shall
continue to protest. We are not
just holding this protest for the
Jewish people; we are holding it
for the freedom of religion for all
mankind.” The USSR should
know, the senator said, that these
“protests will not cease until the
Jews in the USSR receive equal
ity with other minorities.”
The youth rally was sponsored
by the New York Youth Confer
ence for Soviet Jewry. Some of
the banners read: “Awake to the
Plight of Soviet Jewry”; “Save
Soviet Jewry”; and “That Their
Spirit Shall Be Free, Let My
People Go.” The marchers de
manded the cessation of the dis
criminatory ban on all forms of
Jewish education in the Soviet
Union; the cessation of all dis
crimination against Jewish uni
versity students and profession
als; the reunification of families
tom apart by two world wars;
the restoration of Jewish cultural
life; and the implementation of
rights guaranteed to members of
all nationalities under the Soviet
constitution.
These demands were later pre
sented by a youth delegation at
the U. S. Mission to the United
Nations to Ambassador James
Nabrit, deputy representative for
the U. S. on the U. N. Security
Council. The ambassador was
asked to use his j*ood offices to
implement these demands in the
United Nations.

'Counter-Boycott' ofe^Coca-Cola
WASHINGTON (JTA)—A pro
posal for a “counter-boycott” of
the Coca-Cola Company by
American consumers, in response
to the company’s refusal to pro
vide a Coca-Cola franchise to an
Israeli firm, will be considered
by the national executive com
mittee of the Jewish War Vet
erans of the United States, it was
announced.

Food Isn’t Kosher
Bishop Pike Says Christianity
Needs Fewer Beliefs, More Bel ief
question,” he added, “is whether
we can come up with the new
ones—the kosher kitchen — fast
enough.”
Bishop Pike has refused to ac
cept the Christian dogma revolv
ing around the Trinity, the im
maculate conception, etc.
NEW YORK (WUP)—Declar
ing that the Christian Church
today is like a restaurant in a
Jewish area that suddenly dis
covers the reason people haven’t
been coming in to eat: the food
isn’t kosher, Bishop James A.
Pike had some strong words
against the Church. The crucial
problem for Christianity, he com
plained, is whether the kosher
kitchen can be built before the
restaurant fails.
Bishop Pike, known for his
revolutionary stand on Christian
dogma, made this criticism in an
interview following a sermon he
had given here at the St. Thomas
Episcopal Church. “I believe in
God,” he stated, “but He’s not
the God who can be described
by traditional religious categories.

Plead Guilty;
Are Freed
LONDON (JTA)—Four form
er members of the tiny Nation
alist Socialist Party, who plead
ed guilty to setting fires at Lon
don synagogues, were ordered re
leased by Judge A. Aarvold in
Old Bailey court. Judge Aarvold
ordered their release on grounds
that they had indicated they were
penitent and had promised to
stop their anti-Semitic activities.
The four were John Evans, 24,
David Thorne, 20, Michael Trow
bridge, 23, and Raymond Hems-
worth, 18. Evans, Thome and
Trowbridge pleaded guilty to
charges of maliciously setting
fire to the Brondesbury Syna
gogue causing estimated damages
of 120,000 pounds ($336,000).
Evans and Hemsworth pleaded
guilty to setting fire to the Bavs-
water synagogue. A fifth suspect,
Gordon Parker, was found inno
cent and released.
Evans told the court that he
had joined the National Socialist
group in October 1964 but that he
now realized that its doctrines
were “horribly wrong” and com
pletely against everything which
was “respectable and decent.”
The judge told the defendants
“you are young men whose minds
seem to have been snared by a
philosophy which permits and
even encourages the burning
down of holy and venerated
places. Having been so snared,
you were used by unscrupulous
people to further their own evil
design.”
of the JWV executive commit
tee, said a proposal has been
made by “elements of our mem
bership” that “veterans and their
families desist from purchasing
Cooa-Cola products throughout
the United States until such time
as the company discontinues its
discriminatory policies in foreign
sales and franchise practices.”
He added that “the proposal in
cludes a recommendation that
veterans who ate merchants re
frain from selling Coca-Cola
products as a phase of our res
ponse.”
“While I cannot predict wheth
er the counter-boycott concept
commend itself to the national
executive committee after debate
and consideration,” Mr. Kraditor
said, “I can categorically state
that the Jewish veterans will
definitely take strong action. If
the Coca-Cola Company is able
to flaunt the provisions of the
Export Control Act on such
transparent and weak pretexts,
then the whole intent of the law
will be undermined.”
He stated further; “Coca-Cola
may have a legal right to sub
mit to Arab pressures and deny
a Coca-Cola franchise to Israel.
But our members also have a
right to pick and choose which
cola drink they use during the
coming warm weather. That is a
question which we will have de
cided as a matter of organization
al policy. But I can state that we
have had a groundsweU of opin
ion from members and posts
throughout the nation. They are
outraged by the decision of the
Coca-Cola Export Corporation.”
He expressed hope that “the
Coca-Cola people will review
their stand and reject foreign
bigotry.”
NEW YORK (JTA) — A 50-
year-old chain of sea food and
frankfurter stands, Nathan’s Fa
mous, has informed the Coca-
Cola Export Corporation that it
may not continue serving Coca-
Cola at its stands as the only
cola offered to customers. The
chain has outlets in Coney Island,
Yonkers and Oceanside, L. I., and
is one of the biggest sellers of
Coca-Cola in the metropolitan
area.
Murray Handwerker, executive
vice-president of Nathan’s Fam
ous, sent a telegram to Robert L.
Gunnels, staff vice-president ol
the Coca-Cola Export Corpora
tion, stating; “We hereby notify
you that, unless Coca-Cola re
views the situation thoroughly
and revises its decision to keep
its product out of Israel, we can
not in conscience continue serv
ing your beverage as the only
cola offered at our three stores.
This is not a reflection on the
quality of your product, since as
you know we are one of the
largest sellers of Coca-Cola in
this area. However, it is definite
ly a reflection on the quality of
your existing export policy. We
sincerely hope this will be alter
ed so that we can continue our
amicable and mutually profitably
business relationship.”
Supreme Court Bars
Charge Of Excluding
Jews From Jury
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
United States Supreme Court re
fused to examine the complaint
of a Jewish physician, who was
convicted in Norfolk, Va., of per
forming an illegal abortion, that
Jews were improperly kept off
the jury panel.
By its refusal to consider the
appeal of Dr. Harold L. Gold
man, the Supreme Court left
standing as final a decision of
October 6, 1965, by the Virginia
State Supreme Court of Appeals.
The highest state court in Vir
ginia had denied a writ of error
to Dr. Goldman who alleged that
elimination of Jews from the jury
had denied him a fair trial. He
now faces a two-year jail sen
tence.
