GET IN THE SWIM
YOGA AT THE CENTER
By MRS. GAIL MURRAY
Breathing and the Endocrine System
Yoga breathing—pranayama—consists of certain breathing exer
cises which fill the lungs with air from the bottom rather than from
the top, thus utilizing the entire lung space, increasing immensely the
available oxygen to the vital glands in the body. All over the world
hitherto skeptical scientists have at last slowly begun to study and
recognize the merits of Yoga breathing. According to an article which
appeared in the Los Angeles Times on Oct. 27, 1960, a research team
in India stated it has been able to confirm the truth of claims made
through the ages by yogis. They admit that the mastery of Yoga
results in the development of extraordinary physical and mental
powers. A yogi in meditation they found, needs much less oxygen
than the ordinary person; also he is able to immunize himself against
pain, noise, and other external intrusions, and to control the involun
tary function of his body as well as the autonomic nervous system.
Indra Devi, who lives in Hollywood and teaches Yoga to the
movie stars, in her book, Forever Young, Forever Healthy, tells of a
letter sent to her from a Mr. T. N. of Osaka, Japan, who had obtained
a copy of her book and set about practicing Yoga. He stated that after
a few months of regular practice he had already achieved the follow
ing results.
1. I have given up liquor and no longer have any desire for it.
2. I have also lost interest in smoking, soft drinks and spicy foods,
something I did not dream was possible.
3. I have lost much of my excess weight and I’m less nervous and
depressed.
4. There have been remarkable improvements in my health; my
liver condition and my ulcerative colitis are much better.
5. My friends are amazed at the changes Yoga has brought about

in me.
Mr. T. N. had been practicing the rhythmic breathing exercises
and the Yoga postures where deep breathing is done in various posi
tions.
In 1960 Sugar Ray Robinson was able to make an unprecented
bid for a sixth title because his voice coach had taught him the Yoga
breathing methods. “Proper breathing,” said Professor Jarahal Hall,
in an interview in the Los Angeles Examiner of November 29, 1960,
“delays hardening of the arteries: the body doesn’t deteriorate.”
Deep breathing thus provides the system with oxygen and is
extremely important for keeping the glands in healthy condition.
Proper chest development and correct breathing habits affect the
heart, arteries, veins, and the building of red blood cells, as well
as the functioning of the brain and the entire nervous system. This
in turn makes the difference between having an abundance of vital
energy and being a person of low vitality, always tired, doomed to
inevitable slow decreases in physical and mental health. Tension,
insomnia, over-weight, lagging sexual energy, poor circulation, fati
gue, and headaches—all respond to yoga breathing.
Stimulation of the internal glands is also responsible for the
youth, health, and beauty that those who faithfully practice Yoga
enjoy (Gloria Swanson, now past seventy, is dedicated to the practice
of Yoga). Although the ancient yogis did not have any specific knowl
edge of the existence of the endocrines as such, they were fully aware
of the importance of the glandular regions. They were the first to
discover the gland centers and to recognize the vast influence the
activity of these centers exerts upon all the various functions of the
human body. Yoga postures were specifically designed to correct the
sluggish functioning of endocrine glands and to promote and per
petuate their good health and continued efficiency.
The importance of a normally functioning endocrine system
should never be underestimated. It has considerable influence on our
appearance, our disposition, our moods, and behavior—in fact ,on our
overall ability to cope with the ups and downs of life. The possessor
of an endocrine system in fine working order is generally vigorous,
strong, optimistic, mentally keen, swift in action, and intense in his
desires, and on the whole a happy person. Proper or improper func
tioning of these glands is what determines whether a person’s com
plexion glows or is a sickly gray, whether the skin is fresh or dry,
the muscles youthfully elastic or flabby, eyes sparkling or dull
the whole expression radiant or gloomy.
Most endocrine insufficiencies and imbalances are functional, not
organic, in nature. This means that the glands themselves are not af
fected, but that they merely suffer from an inadequate supply of
nerve energy due to undernourishment. This in turn is caused by an
improperly oxygenated blood stream.
The overall effect of Yoga exercises is to keep the glands healthy
and destroy whatever interferes with their normal activity. Glandular
obesity, moroseness, timidity, fear, depression, ovarian disturbance*,
loss of virility, menopause flashes, and some cases of arrested mental
and physical development in children, all may be overcome with the
practice of Yoga breathing exercises and Yoga postures.

An open letter to Parents of Day Campers
Dear Parents:
I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation
for the many unsolicited letters from parents whose children
attended day camp. I have often felt that two-way communica
tion between our staff and parents was the best way to reach
our objectives concerning the camp program and the individ
ual child. Many of the constructive suggestions received will
aid the staff and the Day Camp Committee in preparing for the
1967 season.
If there are any questions that I may answer for you
covering Day Camp, don’t hesitate to call.
Sincerely
Jerry Melman, Camp Director
