Jewish girls from Yugoslavia and
France have arrived in the
United States for a counsellor-
in-training program on scholar
ships provided by Eli A. Cohen of
Swainpscott, Mass., through the
World Federation of YMHAs and
Jewish Community Centers.
The two scholarships, which
include tuition and round-trip
transportation amounting to $2,-
150, grew out of the September
1905 joint conference in Geneva
of members of the Commission
on Centers and Vacation Camps
and representatives of the Na
tional Jewish Welfare Board
(JWB) and the World Federa
tion ol YMHAs and Jewish Com
munity Centers to link the Jew
ish Community Center move
ments of Europe and the U. S.
closer together in their increas
ing areas of mutual interest.
Mr. Cohen attended the Gen
eva conference last September
and offered to provide counsel
lor-in-training scholarships for
two European girls at Camp
Pembroke, Pembroke, Mass., a
non-profit Jewish cultural camp
which he owns.
Elisabeta Gal of Rijeka and
Joelle Kaufmann of Paris are the
recipients. Both girls speak Eng
lish. They have had years of
camping experience and are ap
proaching the age at which they
may qualify to work as counsel
lors. At Camp Pembroke the two
candidates will be part of a
group of teenage girls whose
training will include attendance
at various seminars and classes.

curiosity about
Judaism is
mounting.
Jewish institu
tions are often
visited by
Christians who
then proceed to
ventilate their
inquisitiveness about • our relig
ion and our practices.
Not long ago a church school
class visited a synagogue. This
group of fourth-graders came
armed with a battery of ques
tions which taxed the guide. How
would you do if you were asked
to “field’’ the questions, some of
which tollow?
Do you have to wear any spec
ial clothes in the synagogue?
Do the girls have to wear hats?
Why do the men wear caps?
Do you celebrate church on
Sunday?
Do the teachers dress differ
ently than the children?
Who teaches Sunday School?
Why is part of your service in
Hebrew?
Do you have any Psalms set to
music, like we do?
Does the congregation take
part in the service?
During some ceremonies, why
do you make noises when cer
tain words are spoken?
Do you have Confirmation?
When is a Cantor used?
What is the difference between
Orthodox and the others?
What do the Reform eat?
Why do you have matzos? Why
is it called matzos?
Why, in the markets, are cer
tain items marked, “Not for Pass-
over?”
Do you read about the Chris
tian religion?
Why don’t you celebrate
Christmas? Do you believe that
Jesus lived?
If so, why don’t you believe
him to be the Messiah?
Why do the children get a few
presents each night during Chan
ukah, instead of all the presents
on one night?
No doubt you know all the
answers. If you’re in doubt about
any of therh, check it out with
