New Year Message
Presence of G-D
By Rabbi Emanuel Feldman
CONGREGATION BETH JACOB, ATLANTA, GA.
Rabbi Feldman wrote this while en route to Israel for a Sabbatical
from his spiritual leadership in Atlanta. After settling his family
in Israel, he has returned to conduct High Holy Days services
and will be back in the Mid-East in time to join the faculty at Bar
Ilan University.
This is being written on the
high seas—a little too high for
our comfort at the moment—
on our way to Israel.
One has a chance to think
on a sea voyage. You sit on
the deck and nothing is in
sight but the vast expanse of
water, sky and stars. The
magnitude of it all inspires
awe. You wonder, as you
stand under a vast dome of
stars, how men can go
through life not believing in
a creator. A 30,000 ton ship,
2 Vi city blocks long, several
stories high rocks like a toy
in the midst of a strang gale,
and the waves heave and
smash 30 feet high, and the
wind howls across the deck—
and for a moment you under
stand the meaning of the
words of our daily prayers—
“Hael h a g a d o 1 hagibor
v’hanorah—The L-d, great
mighty and awesome—” and
of the words of the Psalms in
chapter 107: “They who go
down to the sea in ships . . .
they saw the works of the
L-d, and his wonders in the
depths.”
Here all around us is the
presence of the almighty.
But you don’t have to be on
the ocean to feel the presence
of the Holy One. We are all
voyagers through life, and
G-d is present not only in the
whirlwirid, but in the still,
small, quiet moments of daily
life as well. We need only to
be awake and attuned to Him,
through study of Torah and
observance of his Mitzvos,
and He will be felt and per
ceived.
May G-d grant, as we ap
proach the New Year, that all
of us may return to the cen
tral truths of our faith: the
existence of a personal G-d,
and the need to commit our
lives to him.
