Page Twelve THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE Friday, September 16, 1966 NovY Year Message Responsibilities By RABBI RICHARD J. LEHRMAN THE TEMPLE, ATLANTA Yes, the rungs of the ladder leading to the mountain of the Lord can be climbed. Our steps can be sure only if we fulfill our responsibilities as Jews. Then, and only then, shall we approach the Divine and stand in His holy place. “Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord? And who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart. . .” So wrote the Psalmist in ages pas t— how relevant in time pres- en^ * we ap- _roach 5727, we are called upon once again to make the ascent into the moilntain of the Lord and to stand in His holy place. But how do we get there? How does the human aproach the Divine? Not by word and passivity, but through deed and activity. The ascent into the mountain of the Lord is not easy. It re quires work—it demands the involvement of each one of us. We can stand in His holy place only if we answer with our forebearers — “Na’aseh” — we shall do, and fulfill that com mitment in our daily lives. May it be fulfilled in our synago gues, homes and communities, as we seek to ascend into the mountain of the Lord. At the dawn of another year, let us resolve to study our tra dition and apply its teachings in all our actions. Let our wor ship in God’s house inspire our actions in God’s world. Let Judaism live in our homes, as we build and use Jewish libraries, and celebrate the Sabbath, Holy Days and fes tivals. Let us apply the teach ings of Judaism to community problems as we offer our ser vice to the community at large.
