“The Domestic Jewish
Education Corps”
by R1VA SPITZ
"The kids want to act like Jews
and they need someone who will
help them, who will give them
a framework, which is exactly
what we did.”
That is just one of the com
ments that Moshe Dworkin, na
tional director of the Student
Zionist Organization, wrote while
he and 10 young student volun
teers of SZO were in Fargo,
North Dakota, and in this case,
working with Fargo teenagers.
The name of the volunteer
group was “The Domestic Jewish
Education Corps,” composed of
college students who were not
paid for their services.
They had gone to Fargo—popu
lation, 50,000; Jewish population,
120 families—to work with the
Jewish youth of that town and
to enrich the Jewish education
and Israel culture of that Jewish
community. Fargo is a four-hour
drive from Minneapolis, Minn.,
and borders on Moorhead, Minn.
It was a unique pilot project
indeed. For they had traveled to
a strange town and staffed a day
camp for youngsters; held even
ing programs for teenagers and
conducted an educational pro
gram for adults.

bonfire in one of Fargo’s parka.
The discussion subject dealt with
the relevance of Judaism in the
modern world.
The SZO young people told of
their experience on the college
campus; their trips to Israel and
their own commitment to Juda
ism.
For many years now, there
have been large numbers of
volunteers from America, going
to Israel for the summer, for a
year. But here was one of the
first instances of American Jew
ish bpys and girls going to an
American Jewish town, literally
cut off from the mainstream of
Jewish life.
"Our sole purpose,” said Miss
Terry Mostowitz of Brooklyn,
one of the volunteers, “was to
let them know that someone
cared; that the Jewish people are
one, and to encourage them to do
things on their own.”
Certainly one result of the
SZO stay in Fargo was that an
Oneg Shabbat was held in the
Orthodox synagogue and for the
first time in a long time, this
Jewish community got together
in a total community activity.
