Want Anti-Jew Barbs
Out of Passion Play
OBERAMMERGAU, Germany
(WUP)—The local village coun
cil has embarked on an energetic
campaign to delete all anti-Jew-
ish references from the Passion
Play which is due to be perform
ed here in 1970.
The play, depicting the life and
death of Jesus and which is pro
duced every ten years, is replete
with anti-Semitic overtones.
Judas, symbolized as the eternal
Jew, is cast in the role of the
evil element on earth. The drive
for the elimination of anti-Se
mitic references from the Passion
Play came as a result of the
Vatican ecumenical council’s dec
laration maintaining that the
Jews share no collective guilt for
the crucifixion.
