Drive Set for October 2
Ben Rabinowitz and co-chair
man Joseph Lipsius, are in charge
of the general membership drive
of the Hebrew Academy of At
lanta that will take place Oc
tober 2.
Mr. Rabinowitz stressed that
“the Jewish Community is being
asked to give its full support to
the drive.” Mr. Rabinowitz add
ed that the Hebrew Academy is
a community school in the truest
sense of the word. Its student
body of approximately 210 chil
dren comes from approximately
144 families representing all of
the congregations in Atlanta.”
Members of the committee and
all workers for the drive will
meet at the Hebrew Academy
Building the morning of October
2 before going out to the pub
lic.
Dr. Irving Greenberg and
Peggy Bregman are in charge of
the Special Gifts Division; Dr. A.
A. Berger is in charge of the
Physicians and Dentists; and Ed-
Adult Jewish Studies
Fall Institute Semester
Starts Wednesday,
October 12
“A truly diversified adult ed
ucation and information program
will be offered this fall by the
Atlanta Institute of Jewish
Studies, sponsored by the Bureau
of Jewish Education in coopera
tion with the Jewish Community
Center," it was announced by
Bernard Gordon, Bureau presi
dent.
At a time when many of our
people are uncertain about the
characteristics of Jewish identity
and Jewish distinctiveness, Mr.
Gordon added, a searching look
at the classical sources of Juda
ism should help to crystallize the
basic ideas and concepts of our
religion and culture.
In line with this thinking, series
of lectures and seminars will be
offered on biblical and historical
topics. Moreover, one of the most
important treasures of our past,
the Talmud, will be studied for
a full term. “When your Rabbi
again quotes a passage from the
Talmud, Mr. Gordon- stated^'ou
will know what he ia referring
to.” Of course all classical ma
terials will be studied for their
relevance to modem life and pre
sent day conditions.
On the other hand, contemp
orary literature frequently uses
historical events in an effort to
analyze and dramatize the work
ings of the human mind. A case
in point is the quite sensational,
recently published, novel “The
Fixer” by Malamud which is in
cluded in the list of contemporary
Jewish literature to be studied
during the fall term.
Apart from lectures and sem
inars there are the Hebrew lang
uage classes which will be of
fered on various levels for be
ginners, intermediate and ad
vanced students. Regardless of
objective, whether one is inter
ested in modern conversational
Hebrew or in the study of the
language of our prayers, courses
are designed to develop the nec
essary linguistic skills in all di
rections.
Special mention deserves the
introduction in one of the courses
of the new St. Cloud method
which uses filmstrips, tapes and
records in an effort to create a
“cultural island.” It gives the
student the impression that he
lives and moves around in the
country where the particular
language is “at home.”
A class in Yiddish language
and literature will also be offer
ed.
Details about registration or
further information can be se
cured at Bureau office, 525-4825.
Levitas Heads Dental Society
ward Krick will head the Mem
ber* and Parents of the Acad
emy group.
Henry Bimbrey, president of
the Hebrew Academy, stated that
“all education is subsidized. The
public school goes to the taxpay
er for funds, the Synagogue
School to the Synagogue, the
movement sponsored and orient
ed school to its sponsoring body
and the community school can
only go to its community for
help."
He added, “the Atlanta Jew
ish Community has been wonder
ful in their cooperation and res
ponse in helping to create and to
place the Hebrew Academy into
the high position it holds in this
community. We are deeply in
debted to its members for its fine
assistance in sustaining this fine
educational institution.”

Distinguished Duo Headlines
Shearith Israel Bond Drive
Jan and Lillian Bart, two of
the foremost interpreters of Yid-
dish-American songs and humor,
will appear at a dinner celebrat
ing Israel’s eighteenth anniver
sary of independence, it was an
nounced this week by George Al-
terman, chairman of the spon
soring Shearith Israel Committee
for State of Israel Bonds.
The event is set for Sunday,
Oct. 9, 6:30 p. m., at the syna
gogue. It will climax the Shear
ith Israel campaign for Israel
Bonds in 1966 and will mark Is
rael’s “Year of Chai” or Life (in
Hebrew, the number eighteen
(Chait) also signifies the word
for life.)
Mr. and Mrs. Bart have spec
ialized in Yiddish material over
a long and successful career. In
their recent appearances, they
have been performing Yiddish
versions of songs from “Fiddler
on the Roof” from their best
selling record album which has
been widely praised by music
critics. Many have termed their
rendition closer to the spirit af
the shtetl than the original show.
Mr. Bart has been a show busi
ness star for over thirty years.
He has had major success on
stage, radio, television and in
night clubs. One of the highlights
of his career was a command per
formance which he gave at the
White House for President Eisen
hower.
European-born and American-
trained, he blends the best of
both worlds and is frequently
described as a throwback to the
days when the great Jewish art
ists flourished on New York’s
Lower East Side. A colorful ac
count of his varied career is con
tained in his autobiography, “I
Lost a Thousand Pounds," which
has been purchased for filming
by Ernest Borgnine.
Serving as Mr. Alterman’s
co-chairman on the Shearith Is
rael Dinner Committee are two
able veterans of community
leadership, Edward Krick and
Joe 1. Zimmerman. Also, serving
on the Committee are Howard
Adler, Henry Bimbrey, Alan
Bumham, Howard Chesler, Mrs.
Marvin B. Cohen, Mrs. Milton
Crane, Mrs. Maurice Draluck,
Mrs. Max Feldman, Sidney Feld
man, Mrs. William Glass, Sidney
I. Gottler, Harry Harrison, Mil-
ton Krebs, Mrs. Robert Levin,
Ben Minsk, Malcolm Minsk, Her
bert Oster, Mrs. Jay Paulen,
Arthur Poliakoff, Mrs. Harris
Silverman, and Ben H. Zimmer
man.
