Noted Calif. Jurist Speaker at Oct. 15
Dinner Honoring Goldstein, Hartsfield
Justice Stanley Mosk of the
California Supreme Court will be
guest speaker at the First Annual
Abe Goldstein Human Relations
Award Dinner, according to Co-
chairmen M. William Breman
and Ben Massell. The public
ceremony is to be held at the
Standard Club, Saturday, Oct. 5,
at 7:00 p. m.
Justice Mosk was appointed to
the Supreme Court on Septem
ber 1, 1964, and has served since
that date. He has authored many
of the court’s important decisions.
Prior to this he served for six
years as Attorney General of
California. In 1958 he was elected
to the position of attorney gen
eral with a majority of 1,150,000
votes over his opponent, the
largest margin of any contest in
America that year. He was over
whelmingly reelected in 1962. In
both races he received more than
3,000,000 votes.
As attorney general he issued
nearly 2,000 written opinions, ap
peared before the United States
Supreme Court in the Arizona v.
California water case, and argued
other landmark matters before
the Supreme Court. He was the
author of some of California’s
most progressive legislative pro
posals in the crime, narcotics and
law enforcement fields, including
the measure creating the com
mission on Peace Officers’ Stand
ards and Training.
For sixteen years from 1943 to
1959 Judge Mosk was judge of
the Superior Court in Los
Angeles. In 1943 Judge Mosk left
the Superior Court bench and
voluntarily enlisted in the army
as a private. He served until the
end of hostilities and then re
turned to the court.
The occasion of the disting
uished jurist’s visit to Atlanta is
his participation in the cere
monies at which the Abe Gold
stein Human Relations Award
will be presented to Mayor
Emeritus William B. Hartsfield
by the Anti-Defamation League’s
Atlanta Committee. Mr. Harts
field is to be cited for his progres
sive leadership while in office.
