This astounding fact was re
ported this week by Rabbi Marc
H. Tanenbaum in a unique me
morandum describing the results
of the International Conference
on Jewish-Christian Relations
held at Cambridge, England, Au

rector of the inter-religious af
fairs of the American Jewish
Committee, served as co-chair
man of the Commission on Dia
logue at the Conference.
In his memorandum, entitled
“A Major Landmark In Jewish-
Christian Relations,” Rabbi Tan-

Moscow, New Delhi
LONDON (JTA) — Thousands
of Jews packed Moscow’s Grand
Choral Synagogue for Yom Kip-
pur services with an overflow of
2,000 worshipers who could not
get into the synagogue blocking
traffic in the street in front of
the house of worship, it was re
ported here from the Soviet cap
ital.
The report said that crowds
also jammed the city’s two other
synagogues, as Moscow’s Jews
marked the conclusion of the
High Holy Days.

NEW DELHI (JTA)—Mrs. In
dira Gandhi, Prime Minister of
India, visited a synagogue in
honor of the High Holy Days,
and she praised the role the Jew
ish people have placed in his
tory. She visited a 400-year-old
synagogue in the town of Mat-
tancherry, where she was greet
ed enthusiastically by the small
Jewish community, the Jewish
women of the town wearing their
colorful native costumes.
The Prime Minister told the
Jewish community: “India wel
comed those who came to its
shores because India knew that,
by their coming, the Indians
themselves would be enriched.
The Jews played an important
role in history. They have gone
through hardships in their long
history. I hope that their hard
ships are now over and, with the
development of science and tech
nology, there will be all-around
wisdom and tolerance.” (India
has a population of about 18,000

matic relations with Israel, al
though the New Delhi Govern
ment recognized Israel in 1950.)

Program Extended
To 4 More Colleges
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundations
announced expansion of its cam
pus program to four more col
leges.
Hillel counselorships, financed
by allocations from Jewish fed
erations or welfare funds in the
respective areas, were initiated
with the start of the academic
year, it was announced, at Cleve
land State University, Jackson
ville University, the University of
Toledo, and the University of
California at Davis. The last is
supported by the Jewish Federa
tion of Sacramento.
The new additions brought to

Discover Ancient
Biblical Seal Impressions
JERUSALEM (WUP)—A cache
of rare Hebrew seal impressions
dating to about 600 B.C.E. — the
end of the First Temple Period
—has been uncovered at a 10-
day trial dig at Tel Lachich this
month. The eighteen of the clay
pieces—used in sealing papyrus
documents — were found in a
small jar. All of the seals bear
Hebrew names, among which are
“Neryahi” and “Nahum.”
The trial dig was undertaken
to determine the date of a sanc
tuary discovered by a British
team head by Leslie Starkey,
who was murdered by the Arabs
during the 1938 riots.
In Brussels, a Jesuit scholar has
undertaken a similar study of
Portuguese language catechisms
that have been noted for their
strident anti-Semitism.”
The Conference was the first
of its kind to be held since the
adoption of resolutions condemn
ing anti-Semitism by the World
Council of Churches in 1961 and
Vatican Council II in 1965, Rabbi
Tanenbaum declared. ‘It brought
together some 90 scholars and
educators from Great Britain,
France, Belgium, Germany, Aus
tria, Italy, Switzerland, Israel,
the U. S., and Latin America,"
he noted.
The meeting was regarded by
the participants themselves “as a
major landmark in the advance
ment of Jewish-Christians rela
tions throughout the world,"
Rabbi Tanenbaum concluded.
