SIMCHAS TORA
For pure joy there is no holiday like Simchas Tora.
Not infrequently we read of the “yoke” of the Tora. But
if the Tora has this aspect, it has another which is <}uite the
antithesis. Certainly on Simchas Tora it is the feeling of en
largement which the Tora brought to the Jew which is
celebrated.
Simchas Tora brings the Sukkot holiday to its conclusion
and, as a footnote to the holiday perhaps, some reflections on
one of its symbols—the ethrog—may not be amiss.
The good Jew was vers much concerned about his ethrog.
year for them.
Some impurities, presaged a clean, clear and prosperous new
for them.
Oddly enough, in a sense, this has proven true even in the
history of the reborn Israel. When the Jewish farmers first
turned their ploughs to the soil, they were perplexed. They
had to have a crop which they could export and earn some
foreign currency. They first tried grapes, hoping to develop
wine exports. The wine sold moderately but not to the degree
necessary. Other crops were proposed, among them plans to
develop a perfume industry and so on. Finally, the ethrog
came to mind—the fruit waved on Sukkot.
The ethrog is not an orange or lemon but it is of the same
mishpocha—and it was this citrus mishpocha which turned the
trick. It brought Israel her first prosperity.
However, Israel today has grown and, being a land of
limited natural resources, it must import much and so it is
correspondingly necessary for her to increase her exports,
as was recently noted by Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz of the Israel
Bond Organization.
The story of the citrus fruits for export is an encouraging
lesson of what may be done with other things and Dr. Schwartz
is confident that, given the financial means stemming from the
sale of Israel bonds and other sources, the export potential of
Israel may be very substantially enlarged.

Is it necessary to do
; anything to my boiler

before I turn it on ,
ANSWER:
If you turned off your pilot light
last spring, it should be lit and

system should be checked for
proper operation, efficiency and
safety.

History and Jewish Unity
The preoccupation with “Jewish unity”
manifest in the plethora of dialogues and sym
posia of Israel and the Diaspora intellectuals
and of spokesmen for the organizational estab
lishments of the varieties of contemporary
synagogues is proof of the pernicious assimila
tion which defines being-a-Jew in the manner
of Christian identification. It is no accident
that the new anxiety over so-called Jewish
religious unity arose in the wake of Christian
ecumenism. Alienated from the genuine-
organic definition of being-a-Jew and taking
their frames of reference from Christian the
ologies of denominationalism and the standard
formulations of nation and peoplehood, the
participants in the various dialogues and sym
posia on Jewish identification and unity have
not merely obfuscated the issues, but have
come up with notions—misrepresented as
facts—which, if acted upon, would raise per
manent walls of separation between Israel
and the Diaspora Jews and between the fol
lowers of Conservative, Orthodox, Recon
structionist and Reform Jewish interpreta
tions. . . With respect to the formulation of the
problems of the quest for “Jewish unity,” one
notes that the definition is much too narrow
and provincial. . . Jewish unity is elemental
and organic. It is not a matter of “shared be
liefs,” of mutually held convictions and “cul
tural bridges.” We are one people because of
our History. All of us—white Jews and black
Jews—all of us, though we be scattered and
speak diverse tongues—know that we are one
people because of Abraham and the Covenant.
We have the same Book—the Book of Books,
the Hebrew Bible. We have the same history—
the same fate, the identical destiny, repeated,
over and over again in our many dispersions.
And we have the same yeaming-and-hope—
Redemption as Jews and as men. . .

Happy Day For Goldberg-
I am pleased to sign, on behalf of the U.S.
Government, the International Convention on
the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Dis
crimination. For this historic instrument re
flects the aspirations of the vast majority of
my fellow citizens. In recent years the U.S.
has taken steps in landmark legislation and
judicial decisions to ensure the enjoyment of
civil and political rights for all our people. We
have combatted and we shall continue to com
bat the economic and social ills resulting from
long years of racial discrimination. . . In sign
ing this Convention, treaties such as this Con
vention can enter into force in the U.S. only
after they are ratified by the President with
the advice and consent of the Senate. I would
also like to observe that the Convention ac
cords with the objectives of the U.S., as they
are expressed in our Constitution and law. . .
Bold and courageous action is indeed required
if mankind is to eradicate the ancient evil of
discrimination. Only thus will the UN truly
succeed in building an international commun
ity based on respect for law and justice, a
community that recognizes human rights at
the core of all its endeavors. When that recog
nition is universal not only in principle but in
practice—when each nation combats dis
crimination not only in its words at the UN
but with its deeds at home—then the search
for a new and harmonious world' order will
have taken an immense stride toward fulfill
ment.
