LADIES’ and MEN’S HATS
vaganza combines the talents of
Yves St. Laurent, the young Idol
of French couture and successor
to the celebrated Christian Dior,
and leading designers from Is
rael. It marks the first time that
Mr. St. Laurent has ever par
ticipated in an international col
lection.
Judith Beilin, noted Israeli di
plomat and Consul of Israel in
New York, will commentate the
proceedings.
Paraded on the ramp before an
expected capacity audience of
Charleston women will be 45 ex
quisite creations, including 15 by
Mr. St. Laurent, designed to
please Milady at her most formal
or casual. Many of the St. Laur
ent models utilize fabrics fash
ioned in Israel, while Israeli des
igners use materials loomed and
manufactured in France. The
result is a haute couture tour de
force which weds jet-age chic to
old world elegance in one of the
most exciting collections ever as
sembled.
Among the Israeli designers
and manufacturers participa ing
are the renowned Lola Beer and
Finy Leitersdorf; Maskit, the
celebrated village craft indus
tries; furriers Stefan Braun and
Neulander; the knitwear houses
of Aled, Dorina and Galia, and
rising young designers such as
Gideon Oberson, Sabina Schecter
and Marta Vida. The presentation
will be coordinated and accessor

Aimed at Bias In
Banking Industry
NEW YORK (JTA) — Two
members of the New York City
Council announce that they plan
to introduce a local bill at the
Council’s next meeting requiring
that city funds be deposited only
in banks and trust companies that
do not discriminate in their hiring
practices.
The move followed recent dis
closures by the Amerioan Jew
ish Committee that, in the nine
major banks of the city, only
one of the 173 senior executives
was Jewish—and only nine of the
927 middle-level executives were
Jewish—in spite of the fact that
nearly one-third of the city’s
general population and half of the
college graduates are Jewish.
Council Majority Leader David
Ross, from the Bronx, and Coun
cilman Edward L. Sadowsky, of
Queens, both Democrats, propos
ed in the measure that the city
withdraw its funds deposited
from any bank where prejudice
in hiring was found. They noted
that the AJCommittee report
stated that interviews with bank
officials brought responses that
ranged from overt expressions of
prejudice against Jews to ac-
knowledegements of failure to
reach out for available Jewish
talent.
