Adult Institute Classes
Start Wednesday, Oet. 19
“Registration for courses at the
Atlanta Institute of Jewish
Studies continues and class ses
sions will start on Wednesday,
Oct. 19,” it was announced by
Hans Erman, executive director
of the Atlanta Bureau of Jewish
Education.
In sounding this “call to learn
ing’” Mr. Erman pointed out that
a total of 13 courses are offered
this Fall Term. They include the
major areas of Jewish learning,
such as Bible and Talmud, Jew
ish History and Hebrew. In ad
dition, classes will be conducted
on Jewish Music, Contemporary
American Jewish literature, and
Jewish themes ■ in Modem Thea
tre.
For students of Hebrew, classes
are offered for beginners with no
prior knowledge as well as for
students on various levels of
preparation. In cases of doubt,
teachers will be on hand during
registration to advise prospective
enrollees and to direct them to
the proper classes.
In line with the awakening in
terest in Jewish culture, a sub
stantial number of individuals
will engage in the study of Yid
dish language and literature and
more are welcome.
For individuals who are inter
ested in teaching opportunities in
religious schools, a pedagogic
course on "Teaching and Learn
ing in the Jewish School” is Of
fered.
Since the occupation with ideas
and concepts of Judaism is one
of the most satisfying exepriences
in life, stimulating a person’s in
tellectual and spiritual growth,
the public is urged to take ad
vantage of the available oppor
tunities.
The Atlanta Institute of Jewish
Studies is sponsored by the Bu
reau of Jewish Education in co
operation with the Jewish Com
munity Center.
All classes are being conduct
ed at the Center at 1745 Peach
tree Road, N. K.

Sidney Kaplan Taking Key Role
In Ahavath Achim Bond Drive
A second-generation member
of the congregation is taking a
key role in Ahavath Achim’s Is
rael Bonds campaign.
He is Sidney Kaplan, who has
long been a leader in the Syn
agogue and whose family has
been closely identified with Jew
ishness and Judaism for dec
ades.
His father and mother Mr. and
Mrs. Ben Kaplan, are long-time
members of the Synagogue,
having been active members
since they first settled in Geor
gia. His son Scott Kaplan is pres
ident of the Ahavath Achim
Minyanaires.
The sale of Israel Bonds within
the Ahavath Achim family of
members will come to a climax
on Wednesday, Oct. 19, when
the annual Ahavath Achim an
nual bond dinner will be held at
7 p. m. Principal entertainer at
the event will be Joey Adams, a
master of serio-comic Yiddish-
keit.
Israel’s Southeastern Consul
General Zeev Boneh will be pre
sent to take part in the program
as will the Congregation’s spir
itual leader Rabbi Harry Epstein.
Sidney, a popular member of
Ahavath Achim, became identi
fied with his synagogue’s activ
ities early In life. He was Bar
Mitzva-ed there. He was con
firmed there and he graduated
with the Ahavath Achim High
School. He has been a youth
leader for the Boy Scouts, for
the Cub Scouts and for the Little
League. He is currently chairman
of the Synagogue’s Youth Activ
ities Committee.
A native of Atlanta, Sidney at
tended Emory University and
graduated with a Bachelor of
SIDNEY KAPLAN
Business Administration degree.
As an undergraduate, he was
chancellor of his Tau Epsilon Phi
fraternity chapter.
He sought his livelihood in real
estate development.
Somewhere along the line, he
became a real devotee of Jewish
education. He is on the Board of
the Bureau of Jewish Education
and is financial secretary of the
Hebrew Academy. Three of his
children attend the Academy.
It seems quite a natural cor
ollary that his dedication to Ju
daism should find expression in
support of the State of Israel
through the sale of Israel Bonds
—and many other ways as well.
