As We Were Saying
(A fcna Aria FwUore)
There la the white backlash
now, no mistake about it A year,
two years later than moat people
predicted, the reaction against
the Negro revolution has set in;
the less restrained Stokely Car
michael has taken charge of the
Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee and the equally-
vigorous Floyd McKissick has
become national director of
CORE. “Black Power” is the term
of the new day. And millions of
good people, white and black, are
deeply worried.
Practically all of us who like
to study and speak and take ac
tion concerning racial injustice
have been given our walking
papers. It is made clear to us
that we can stay out of the Black
Ghetto until summoned. (“Don’t
call us: we’ll call you.”)
And the expected reaction in
the Jewish community booms in
to our ears. Let me quote from
recent fan-mail: “It gripes me to
hear of individuals like you
speaking in Temples to Jewish
congregations telling them how
much they should exert them
selves to the improvement of the
Negro community. You should
awaken before it’s too late.” How
can I answer? The letter is un
signed.
No lack of answers if the op
portunity comes, of course. The
National Committee of Negro
Churchmen have perhaps the
most eloquent answer:
“What we see, shining through
the variety of rhetoric (about
*black power’) is not anything
new but the same old problem of
power and race which has faced
our beloved country since
1619. . . The fundamental distor
tion facing us in the controversy
about ‘black power 1 is rooted in a
gross imbalance of power and
conscience. . . responsible for the
widespred, though often inarticu
late assumption that white peo
ple are justified in getting what
they want through the use of
power, but that Negro Americans
must, either by nature or by cir
cumstances, make their appeal
only through conscience. . . Pow
erlessness breeds a race of beg
gars. We are faced now with a
situation where conscience-less
power meets powerless consci
ence, threatening the very found
ations of our nation. . . We de
plore the overt violence of riots,
but we believe it is more import
ant to focus on the real sources

of these eruptions. These sources
may be abetted inside the ghetto,
but their basic causes lie in the
silent and covert violence which

flicts upon the victims of the in
ner city.”
No lack of answers if people
will listen. We who have “drawn
the white noose” about the black
slums awake far, far too late to
appreciate how deeply the poison
of distrust sinks into the psyches
of fellow Americans with dark
skins when discrimination, under
employment, human devaluation,
and unconscious arrogance on the
part of the majority in society
hammer at their victims incess
antly.
No lack of answers if our false
set of values is rectified. Simply
because an emotional and articu
late 24-year-old Negro leader
(Stokely Carmichael) gives a
hungry press the term, “Black
Power,” to toss about while a
shameless Congress of the United
States is cutting the heart out of
a civil rights bill, we have an
entire new army of Cassandras
and wise men. They have not
seen the rat-infested shanties in
Negro Slumtown lately, but they
know of course, why they are
there. They have tucked away in
their pockets the damaging sta
tistics about violence and illegiti
macy and the numbers rackets
and purse snatching; and they
cannot be bothered with seeking
the root causes.
No lack of answers if we see
the picture in its true depth: the
wretched American Nazis joining
other Chicago primitives In hoot
ing at Martin Luther King; the
smug suburban parents who want
only the best for their young
sters and heaven preserve qpr
property values.
If black men in our boom-and-
bust society proclaim that non
violence is dead; if the indigen
ous new leaders in the deepen
ing Black Ghettoes of our great
cities cut themselves off from
former white allies; if the obvi
ously misunderstood term, “Black
Power," goes into the history
books as the strange rallying cry
of 20,000,000 long-harassed and
neglected Americans, it doesn t
follow at all that the cause of the
Negro in the United States is
lost
The battle for what is right has
begun only now. The backlash
whistles and cuts; but it is only
a momentary frenzy. We are a
resilient people in a country
abounding in resourcefulness
and imagination. The nation is far
greater than the faint-hearted
and querulous among us. It will
endure; and its people—all of its
people—shall be free.
