THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Rabbi Urged to Allay
Fear of ‘Black Power’
The slogan “black power” and
the reported “deterioration” in
the relationship between Jews
and Negroes should not discour
age rabbis from encouraging sup
port of civil rights programs, a
leading Jewish rabbinic scholar
and educator told an assemblage
of more than 300 rabbis recent
ly.
Dr. Emanuel Rackman, assis
tant to the president of Yeshiva
University, added that rabbis
should also increase their involve
ment in the war against poverty,
even to the extent of encouraging
their congregants to “welcome the
necessary heavy taxes as a priv
ilege rather than a burden.”
Dr. Rackman made his re
marks at the 23rd annual Yesh
iva University Rabbinic Alumni
Convention at the Monsey Park
Hotel, Monsey, N. Y., October 17
through October 19.
Referring to the “black power”
slogan, Dr. Rackman said rabbis
should recognize that most of its
advocates are referring to “the
power of the vote, not violence.”
He said statements by some
black power advocates that 'they
want black people to run their
own movements should not be
“exaggerated” by Jews. “When
Negroes say they want to be in
charge of their own organization,”
he said, “they are speaking in
the same voice as Zionists in Is
rael who have complained that
American Zionists are interfer
ing in their affairs.”
Referring to the poverty pro
gram, Dr. Rackman said “it is
an unequivocal mandate of Ju
daism that no expense must be

spared to help the unserved and
eliminate poverty, especially
through the rehabilitation of
people—and that means we must
support programs to improve
schools, housing and all other
services through which the poor
can help themselves.”
By support, he said, he meant
that rabbis should “help their
congregants welcome the heavy
tax programs by dignifying the
payment of taxes so that it will
be regarded as a privilege rather
than a burden.”
Unity Gains Ground
In Great Britain
LONDON (JTA)— Efforts by
the B’nai B’rith in Britain for
British Jewish unity is gaining
acceptance, and the movement
here has members who belong to
all secular and religious groups,
Jack Morrison, president of the
British B’nai B’rith reported
here. He spoke at a meeting of
the seventh plenary session of the
order’s International Council.
Dr. William A. Wexler of Sa
vannah, B’nai B’rith president,
told the council meeting that
there were many problem areas
for Jews in the world, citing
South America, South Africa and
Austria, He said that, even in the
United States, “we have a George
Rockwell and similar phenom
ena, and the virus of anti-Sem
itism is being spread over there.”
He also referred to the situation
of Soviet Jewry as additional
evidence of his thesis that “we
have no right to be complacent.”
Dr. Wexler noted that B’nai
B’rith was now sponsoring 259
Hillel Foundations throughout
the world, including Israel, and
added that much more could
have been done if the means
were available. He said it was
his duty as president “to demand
more sacrifices” from the move
ment for the Hillel Foundations
program.
