Witch Koch
Seeks Pension
BONN (JTA)— Ilse Koch, who
became known as the “Witch of
Buchenwald" when testimony at
her Nazi war crimes trial reveal
ed she had ordered lampshades
made from the skins of victims
of the Buchenwald death camp,
renewed this week her application
for a government pension.
She is serving a life term for
atrocities at the camp during the
period when her husband, Karl,
was commandant. He was shot
by German troops the day before
the Allies liberated the camp.
Her first pension application
was rejected. She filed a com
plaint against the rejection con
tending that she was entitled to
a pension because her husband
was a member of the Waffen
SS, and not of the General SS.
The Waffen SS was made up of
Hitler Elite Guard members who
were in active military service.
The General SS comprised the
men who ran the Nazi concentra
tion camps.
Ilse Koch was sentenced to a
term of life imprisonment at
hard labor by an Allied court in
1947. The sentence was reduced
by American occupation officials
a year later to four years. After
a public outcry, a new trial was
held in 1950 and she received the
life term she is now serving.

LONDON (JTA)— The Soviet
Union is pouring weapons into
Syria and other Arab states to
strengthen its growing influence
in the area, diplomatic sources
here reported. The sources as-
aserted that munitions were ar
riving in the area at a rate rem
iniscent of the USSR’s heavy
arms shipments to the area in
the 1950’s, prior to the 1956 Suez
clash. The Soviet equipment was
reported to include tanks, guns,
planes and rockets. The recipi
ents, in addition to Syria, were
reported to include Egypt and
Iraq.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (JTA) —
Creation of an international cen
ter for studies in Jewish-Chris-
tian relations was proposed here
by a rabbi who participated in a
four-day international colloquium
on Judaism and Christianity.
The project, outlined at a dinner
attended by 150 scholars from
Europe, Israel, and the United
States at Harvard Divinity School,
was suggested by Rabbi Marc H.
Tanenbaum, director of inter
religious affairs department of
the American Jewish Committee.
He proposed that the center
would link together in scholarly
dialogue Christian and Jewish
scholars from Jerusalem, Rome,
Gqneva and Constantinople, and
from American intellectual cen
ters. He disclosed that he had
explored the idea of such an in
ternational center with author
ities at the Hebrew University
in Jerusalem and with a num
ber of Roman Catholic, Protes
tant, and Orthodox leaders.
“Their reaction,” he said, “was
one of deep and sympathetic in
terest.'
Dr. Samuel H. Miller, dean
of the Divinity School, comment
ed that such a center would en
able theologians to engage in
work on the “frontiers" of inter
religious relations and in schol
arly exchanges which would seek
exorcise the prejudioes of the
past.
