UNITED NATIONS (WUP) —
Ever sinoe she had escaped the
Hitlerian holocaust, having fought
in the French Underground
against the Nazis, was instrumen
tal in rescuing scores of Jewish
children, Miss Margo Wolff—now
a writer and lecturer—had enter
tained hopes that a new and bet
ter Germany would emerge out
of the ashes of the old murderous
regme.
Thus Margo made it her busi
ness to visit her birthplace on an
annual basis hoping each time to
find signs of a rebirth.
Now Margo comes from a dis
tinguished Berlin Jewish family.
She is one of the last remaining
relatives of the late Theodore
Wolff, who was editor-in-chief of
the well-known Berliner Tage-
blatt. Her attachment to Germany
has been strong, despite World
War II.
During a visit to the WUP UN
Bureau recently, the writer took
the occasion to interview the bril
liant German “commuter” on the
latest ominous developme n t s
within the former Hitler-land.
What about the Hesse elections
of neo-Nazis? The candidacy of
Kurt Georg Kiesinger, a former
Nazi, for the Chancellorship as
put up by the Christian Demo
cratic Party?
Pausing a moment and exhibit
ing a spirit of sadness, Margo
opened her heart, “Two years
ago,” she said, “I had high hopes
when I witnessed the inaugura
tion of the ‘Atonement Syna
gogue’ built by German young
sters in a suburb of Lyons,
France. But, during my stay in
Germany this summer I was
shocked to note a deterioration
of the general feeling of demo
cracy.
“The atonement movement,”
Margo stressed, “has made no
headway. The attitude shown by
the older generation, among
whom are a great many clergy
men, unfortunately, does not en
courage these tendencies of
moral repentance. I had just left
Jewish Leaders Back
Battle on Radicals
WASHINGTON (JTA) — A
number of prominent Jewish
leaders are members of a com
mittee backing a new organiza
tion, Institute for American De
mocracy, formed to fight both the
radical right and the radical left,
its chairman announced.
The Jewish members of the
committee include Dore Schary,
chairman of the Anti-Defamation
League of B’nai B’rith; Morris
Abram, president of the Amer
ican Jewish Committee; Leon
Keyserling, the economist; Jacob
Blaustein, honorary president of
the American Jewish Committee;
C. E. Israel vice-president of
Fashion Frocks; Jacob Potofsky,
president of the Amalgamated
Clothing Workers Union; and Dr.
William Haber, dean of the Col
lege of Education of Michigan
University.

the city of Berlin in July when
the rebuilt Jewish Center was
bombed. Although city officials
expressed shock at th s incident,
not a single clergyman through
Germany had used this terrible
incident as a topic of admonish
ment to their congregations at
any subsequent Sunday.”
On the question of the Hesse
elections of neo-Nazis, Margo
noted that that State had enjoyed
the most “democratic set-up sec
ond only to Berlin. The Minister
of Education of Hesse,” she said,
“Rrof. Ernst Schutte, was one
of the first Germans some ten
years ago to take drastic meas
ures to re-educate the youngsters
in the rise and fall of Nazism.
Despite his efforts and those
exerted by other educators, neo-
Nazism managed somehow to
creep up to the grief and bitter
disappointment of those few elect
who had worked and hoped for a
new birth.”
As for the selection by the CDU
Party of a former Nazi to succeed
Chancellor Erhardt, Miss Wolff
had this to say: “The very fact
that a Party, which has made
Christianity part of its whole pro
gram, could have stooped so low
as to have allowed the nomina
tion of a man tainted by mem
bership in the Nazi Party—des
pite his claim of having done
some good — bears out that the
Germans have not yet learned the
lesson of World War II and comes
as a basic contradiction to its pro

Italy Honors Israelis
TEL AVTV (WUP) — Six
Israelis were recently awarded
medals by the Italian Ministry
of Foreign Affairs for services
rendered to Italian culture. The
recipients included: Prof. Zvf
Yavetz of the Tel Aviv Univer
sity; Dr. Meir Vardi of the Min
istry of Foreign Affairs, who
translated several works from
Italian into Hebrew, and Yosef
Burstein, head of the Youth and
Cultural Department of the local
Municipality.
WIZO Seeks Means
To Overcome Deficit
TEL AVIV (JTA)— Delegates
to the 16th conference of the
Women’s International Zionist
Organization adopted a resolution
to raise an additional $1,000,000
to help meet the organizations
financial difficulties.
Mrs. Raya Jaglum, WIZO exe
cutive chairman, reported that
WIZO had a current deficit of
5,200,000 pounds ($1,730,000). She
asked the conference to approve
a suggestion that all WIZO kin
dergartens in Israel be turned
over to local officials for the next
two years while the organization
concentrated on expansion of its
day nurseries, youth clubs and
vocational training schools.
ciples.”
Margo Wolff expressed one
hope for West Germany—Willy
Brandt. “I feel that the Federal
Republic should be very proud to
have such a party leader—a man
with a clean record and courag
eous. There can be no doubt,”
she stated, “that the Chancellor
ship of Brandt, in connection
with the Free Democratic Party
originally formed by the late
Prof. Theodor Huess, could do
much in the battle against the
rising tide of neo-Nazism within
West Germany.”
Miss Wolff is the U. S. corres
pondent for “Maccabee” of Swit
zerland and the Basler National
daily Zeitung, the liberal voice of
the German-speaking people in
Switzerland. She is also a col
umnist for the New York Ger-
man-Jewish weekly, Aufbau.
