(A Seven Arts Feature)
Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the Jewish land resurrected.
On our first trip to Israel I fin
ally saw what I’ve been singing
about most of
my life—the soil
of Judea revita
lized.
It happened to
be cham isha
asar b i s h v a t
when, with the
aid of one of
those s t a lwart
I s r a e lis who
serve as guides to the tourists, I
came upon Balfour Forest in the
hills of Galilee.
Like thousands before me, I
stooped and planted a sapling on
a steep slope being made ver
dant by the Jewish National
Fund.
Chamisha asar bishvat, or tu
bishvot, is the new year of the
trees. In Israel, though it is the
month of January, it marks the
beginning of the spring season.
The holiday was a fitting time
to plant a tree.
The name of the forest was also
suitable, since this year marks
the observance of the fiftieth an
niversary of the famous Balfour
Declaration.
It was in 1917 that his maj
esty’s government approved of a
Jewish state in Palestine.
The architects of that fifty year
period, despite travail and trag
edy, have been glorified in song
and in oratory.
A land has been rejuvenated.
A language has been resuscitated.
A people has been reborn.
No matter how many times you
have heard the story, you feel
the excitement of it when with
your own eyes you behold the
farms, new settlements, new kib
butzim and new forests.
So small is Israel that on some
maps there isn’t room to write its
name. But even the sight of the
Britain Backs
Move to End
Soviet Bias
LONDON (JTA)— Prime Min
ister Harold Wilson recently told
Parliament that Britain has
raised the question of the situa
tion of Soviet Russia’s 3,000,000
Jews “many times.”
The statement was in reply to
Sir Ian Orr-Ewing, Conservative,
who had asked whether “in the
present atmosphere of good will,”
Mr. Wilson would follow up the
requests of- British Jewry and
members of Parliament for So
viet Prime Minister Alexei N.
Kosygin to take steps to alleviate
hardships of Jews in the USSR
“Something like 300 members of
Parliament have signed a motion
on this problem^’ Sir Ian told Mr.
Wilson: “It is an issue on which
they feel strongly.”
Mr. Wilson replied that, while
it was necessary that some
individual matters had to be
taken up separately with Mr.
Kosygin, rather than in the main
plenary pafi of the discussions,
Sir Ian “could be assured” that
the question has been raised
every time the British Foreign
Minister had met representatives
of the Soviet Government. Mr.
Wilson added: “Wo all feel
strongly about this. But the So
viet Government does not admit
some of the statements we have
made on the issue, and, of course,
regards it as an internal matter.”
Lord Bertrand Russell, long
considered a friend and apologist
of the Soviet regime, sent a let
ter to Mr. Kosygin at the Soviet
Embassy, asking him to use his
authority to odd delays experi
enced by those living in Russia
who want to be reunited with
their families in other countries.
The famed philosopher said that,
despite Mr. Kosygin’s statement
in Paris last December that the
road was open for those who
wished to leave Russia to rejoin
their families, applicants for exit
permits continued to encounter
difficulties.
first two letters reminds you of
the miracle of it all.
Israel is.
Israel recently celebrated the
seventieth birthday of Rabbi Is
rael Goldstein. Actually the
famed rabbi’s birthday occurred
last summer.
He and his wife (herself one
of the outstanding personalities
m the Jew sh and Zionist words)
tried to keep the birthday a
secret. Bet so conspicuous a per
sonage cannot keep his milestones
secret or his friends from saluting
him.
And what a career is Dr. Gold
stein’s. Still at the crest of cre
ativity, Dr. Goldstein resides in
Jerusalem, where he heads the
United Israel Appeal. As rabbi
of Manhattan’s enormous Jesh-
urun Congregation, Dr. Goldstein
inspired almost two generations
of his people. At the same time
he lent his talents to the leader
ship of many of the outstanding
Jewish organizations in the
United States. To this day he is
chairman of the Jewish Board of
Conciliation, where disputes are
settled in accordance with Jewish
law. Indeed, Dr. Goldstein has
occupied more presidential chairs
than any living Jew.
Also, in the thick of his con
gregational and organizational
duties, his sense of social justice
moved Dr. Goldstein to take in
the political life of New York.
Like the late Stephen Wise, who
was once his mentor, Dr. Gold
stein boldly entered political
forays—regardless of the anxie
ties and antagonism of some of
his people.
Lover of Zion, Dr. Goldstein
decided to come to live in Is
rael. His wife assented — and
they have become among the
most eminent of Holy Land resi
dents. Among other things, Mrs.
Goldstein is earning the title of
Israel’s Ladybird as she presses
beautification projects in the
land.
One of Dr. Goldstein's great
joys has been the naming of a
synagogue for him on the campus
of the Hebrew University—a gift
from his congregation. Also bear
ing his name is a splendid voca
tional high school attended by
hundreds of appreciative chil
dren.
Now his friends have endowed
a chair in Zionism at the He
brew University in his honor of
this spiritual colossus who be
strides both American Israel and
the State of Israel.
Catholic College
Has Jewish Studies
DETROIT (JTA)—The Univer
sity of Detroit, a Roman Catholic
institution, has introduced a pro
gram of Jewish studies under the
direction of Dr. Shlomo Marenof,
dean of the College of Jewish
Studies here.
Rev. Paul F. Conen. the Jesuit
dean of the university’s College
of Arts and Sciences, who an
nounced the new program, said
that the studies will deal “not
only with the special religious and
cultural relationships which exist
between Judaism and Christian
ity, but also with the broader
themes of the history of Jewish
contributions- to contemporary
civilization and the place of Ju
daism in the modem world.”
Sir Victor Gollancz
Dies in London at 73
LONDON (JTA)— Sir Victor
Gollancz, 73, controversial Jewish
publisher, philosopher, ad essay
ist, died here after a short ill
ness. The Oxford-educated scion
of a rabbinical family, who be
came highlightly successful as a
publisher, was widely known for
his individualistic approach to
Judaism, which accepted its eth
ical teachings, while rejecting
formal observance.
Although he kept out of most
Jewish communal affairs, he was
a member of the board of gov
ernors of the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem and an active mem
ber of its fund-raising organi
zation in Britain.
