New Dalton Rabbi
Special to The Southern Israelite
Shortly before Hanuka, the
Dalton Jewish community wel
comed wholeheartedly Rabbi
Philip Fried and his family to
their town and congregation.
Rabbi Fried, his wife Sounia
and daughter Tamra, came to
Congregation Beth-el from
Lakewood, Calif, where he
served a congregation for the
past five years. There he serv
ed as chairman of the Board of
Rabbis of the Harbor Bay Area
of Long Beach and Santa Ana.
A native Israeli, Rabbi Fried is
a. descendent of three genera
tions of rabbis and received his
early training at the “Tach Ke
Mo Nee” Yeshiva in Jerusalem
and the Gim Nas Yah in Tel-
Aviv. He attended and grad
uated from Gratz College in
Philadelphia and was ordained
by the Yavneh Hebrew The
ological Seminary.
Dalton Jewry, which has a
spirit and enthusiasm far be
yond its numbers, had its be
ginning back in 1880, though it
was not until 1946 that the
present house of worship and
community center was con
structed. Prior to that they
worshipped informally. In 1949.
their first full-time spiritual
leader, Rabbi Simon Hevesi,
began conducting a Jewish
radio program on Radio Sta
tion WBLJ. Now, Rabbi Fried
continues “The Voice of the
Synagogue” on the same sta
tion.
Now, twenty years after the
Temple was built, its Sunday
School numbers over 30 chil
dren with four teachers. Rabbi
Fried brings to Dalton an en
thusiasm to match that of his
congregants and has instituted
early Shabbas morning ser- »
vices and a junior congrega
tion. He has also been instru
mental in preparing the/series
of adult education programs
and inaugurated a confirma
tion class.
With a particular emphasis
on the youth of the congrega
tion, Beth-el has recently be
gun a Sunday Minyonnairs
group with the young people
conducting services and fathers
hosting bagel and lox break
fasts.
In addition to his rabbinical
duties, Rabbi Fried received
training at the Einstein Hos
pital in Philadelphia and is
qualified to serve as “mohel”
for his community and others
requesting his service in the
ancient rite of circumcision.
Mrs. Fried assists in the He
brew School and in many other
ways.
Joe Ginsberg is serving as
president of Beth-el with Oscar
Jonas and Martin Richman,
vice presidents; Jack Frank,
treasurer and David Siegel,
secretary. The board of direc
tors includes Ed Freedman,
Irving Funk, Leonard Lorber-
baum, Jack Lumiere, Sam Mil-
lender, Dr. Eli Rosen, Harry
Saul, William Wiesen, Ben
Winkler and David Winkler.
The ever-active Sisterhood
is presently headed by Mrs.
Shara Stock with Mrs. Beaulah
Rodstein, vice president, Mrs.
Tillie Morris, treasurer and
Mrs. Helen Saul and Mrs. Lil
lian Siegel as secretaries.
Perhaps the motto on the
cover of the “Beth-el Bulletin”
indicates best the spirit Rabbi
Fried and those of his congre
gation. It says: “We agree to
differ—we resolve' to love—we
unite to serve.”
