Although this anniversary is the occasion for great joy
and happiness among friends of Ahavath Achim
Congregation, it is not the birthday actually which is
being celebrated, but the day-by-day, week-by-week,
the year-by-year contacts, indeed the person-by-person
involvement in their faith. These have mounted up in
a great surge of achievement and we who are observers
salute members for the decades of devotion and
dedication.

A happy time this 80th Anniversary, a reflective time
to look backwards and see what path we have traveled,
to look around and see what has been achieved and to
eye the future and how we can meet the challenge of
the years ahead.

hood was launched and plans
for future work were discussed
and adopted. At this first
meeting the eighteen ladies
present became members, pay
ing their dues that afternoon
to the tune of $36.00!
No time was lost in getting
to wdrk and within six months,
the “Ways and Means Com
mittee” held its first Bazaar,
netting the grand sum of
$1,858.12. That money was used
to furnish the classrooms in
the synagogue.
Through the years, the Sis
terhood stretched the five class
rooms in that original build
ing, rented a house adjoining
the synagogue on Woodward
Avenue in 1934, converting its
six rooms into classrooms,
used the facilities of the Crew
Street School, (on a rental
basis) and did everything pos
sible to see that adequate pro
visions took care of the ever
increasing enrollment.
From its first president, Mrs.
Jacobs, to the present one, Mrs.
Alvin Halpern, the keen
interest of these women has
been felt in their energetic
participation. A history of the
synagogue would scarcely be
complete without mentioning
these remarkable leaders who
served as presidents following
Mrs. Jacobs: Mrs. Jake Fae-
man, Mrs. Meyer Rich, Mrs.
David N. Meyer, Mrs. Sol O.
Klotz, Mrs. Sam H. Berman,
Mrs. Louis Samet, Mrs. Abe
Goldstein, Mrs. Simon Bress-
ler, Mrs. Jake Friedman, Mrs.

Rabbi Gold

Mrs. Stanford Makover, Mrs.
Leonard A. Meyer, Mrs. Jacob
Levitt, Mrs. Betty Ann Gordon,
Mrs. Beryl Koplin and Mrs.
Alvin Halpern.
Today, sponsoring the Re
ligious School with an enroll
ment of 1,391 children is just
one of the important functions
of the Ahavath Achim Sister
hood. These dedicated women
do much more! Everything
from the Book Shop to the
youth programs, from Keren
Ami to Torah Fund have bene-
fitted from the feminine touch
of the Sisterhood.
For the past 45 years, their
continuing projects have been
labors of love which have en
abled the Religious School to
grow from its meager begin
nings to the magnificent Orkin
How glorious has been the service, how
deep the currents of progress for
Ahavath Achim’s busy congregation
members. Our congratulations.
