into religious obligations when
they reached early adolescence
and celebrated their Bat
Mitzva. No longer did you hear
the old chants, “Finf tollar um
shlishi!” (“Five dollars for the
third reading-'”) Yes, changes
occurred, and Ahavath Achim
was expanding—and chang
ing—to meet the times!
These progressive steps were
furthered by the capable men
during their administrations:
Abe Goldstein, Thomas Mak-
over, Charles Bergman, Simon
Bressler, Max Cuba, Dr. Na
than Blass, and Joe G. Zaglin.
A most significant step was
finalized in 1952 when, during
the administration of Dr. Na
than Blass, Ahavath Achim of
ficially joined the United Syna
gogue of America as a constit
uent affiliate of the Conserva
tive Movement. Progressively,
since 1928, Ahavath Achim had
modernized its services—hav
ing as its slogan: “Not a re
formed synagogue, but an in
formed one.”
With all the various activi
ties, the Educational Center
soon became congested with
too little space for too many
people. The Henry Grady High
School was rented for Sunday
morning classes. Added to this
inconvenience, plus the diffic
ulties involved in operating two
buildings, it was a certainty
that another move would be
compulsory.
Atlanta had been devouring
land everywhere for the giant
expressway systems, and it
soon became common knowl
edge that Washington Street
was one of the areas affected.
