explain to kids fifteen yearls old
who have all had br-mhers or
cousins who just won a war, an
impossible war, against the
Arabs, that six million Jews
went into the gas chambers.
It’s not the fact that they were
killed which was indigestible
to young sabras, but the fact
that they didn’t kill six SS
divisions before getting into the
gas chambers—which was hard
to swallow.
The way it was solved, and
I’m not saying it was the best
way, is that our educator told
the kids and they still do to
some extent, that the rabbis
led their congregations with
the Torah Scrolls, singing
hymns, and that’s the way the
trains approached Auschwitz,
and that’s the way they got off
the trains. We know in a few
cases that this was literally
true. We don’t know in how
many, but you see their point.
Th^y were trying to extract at
least one drop of glory from the
sea of x hit tern ess of life. What
they diahit foresee was the
psychological^, reaction of the
young generation of sufferers.
I would like yotkto visualize
the picture. These <a^e young
kids, perhaps the firsiggnera-
tion of unhyphenated Jews,
who are Jews the way Mr.
Johnson is an American period.
And they are just that. They
are taught at school that the
Torah and King David’s Psalms
were sung and recited half an
hour before mass murder. The
reaction of the whole genera
tion was something like this:
If religion and rabbis led us to
Auschwitz—then to hell with
religion and I’ll go on believing
in my machine gun.
I overgeneralize and simplify
but I fear very much that I’m
not far from the truth. So we
had young sabras cutting the
few ties they still had with
mamalushen which in Israel is
‘babalushen’ because mother
dpesn’t speak Yiddish any
more. Grandmother does, and
she lights the candles and if
she does, it’s a quaint old habit
which has nothing to do with
the Palmach nor with dancing
hora, and shooting with the
Arabs which is a good man’s
job.
That’s one! There’s another
reason why atheism became the
fashion of the day—because
many tens of thousands of
Jews who had survived the
camps, and still walk the
streets of Tel Aviv and Jeru
salem with the numbers tat
tooed into their forearms, were
not so much atheists as what
I could call anti-theists, or mad
at G-d for having allowed that.
You see, the term atheist if you
listen to it, implies indiffer
ence, lukewarmness. If I don’t
believe in China’s Atomic bomb.
I’m not going to get hot about
anything at all. I just don’t be
lieve—period. If you do not be
lieve in G-d, you’re lukewarm
and indifferent and think of
other issues. Well, they, were
not. They were very hot and
bothered, and still are. They
cannot understand, and who of
us can.blame them, that six
million including the cream of
East European Jewry went up
in sftroke. They just can’t digest
it—whn. can? And anti-theism
is a trend still strong among
the survivor^ in the camps of
Israel.
There is a thibd reason why
we had a swing aw'Sy from re
ligion. Halacha, rabbinical law
which has governed JewTsli life
for many, many centuries, was
formulated and codified whetnv^
er we like it or not, for a police
less, landless, exiled people
which lives wherever it lives
