LETTER FROM ISRAEL
An Afternoon With Agnon
By Rabbi Emanuel Feldman .
Beth Jacob’s Spiritual Leader is now on Sabbatical leave to teach
at Bar-Ilan l). An expansion on his visit with Agnon will appear
shortly in the ‘‘Saturday Review of Literature.”
Early in February I spent a
fascinating afternoon with Nobel
Prize winner Shmuel Yosef Ag-
non.
When I arrived at his home,
Mr. Agnon was just going out for
a stroll in the afternoon sun of
Jerusalem, brilliant even in the
cold of winter. He asked me to
join him. We walked for several
hours across the rolling hills,
talking of many things: the ef
fects of fame upon him; his style
of writing and his use of Biblical
Hebrew; his religious practice;
and a host of other matters large
and small.
From Agnon’s front steps one
can almost reach out and touch
the desolate hills across the Is-
rael-Jordan boundary line. Every
so often he would stop short,
touch my arm, point to the hills
and say, ‘‘Look, just look,” and
we would stare across the border
at the softly rounded slopes
brooding in the strange yellow
light of the afternoon sun. He has
been living in this spot for forty
years, but he is still fascinated by
the ever-changing colors of Jer
usalem.
Agnon is a complex man, al
though he likes to pose as just a
simple, pious old Jew. Of course,
he scrupulously observes all the
Mitzvos and finds strength and
beauty in each of them. But he
is also intensely conscious of his
art and his mission in life, which,
as he sees it, is to impart to mod
ern man some of the flavor and
taste of the original Jew, who
was aware of G-d’s presence, yet
anguished by His hiddenness;
who constantly reached out for
G-d, yet found that He is not
easily found.
For Agnon, the answer to mod
ern man’s personal frustration
and discontent lies in a return to
the origins of our faith: Bible,
Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash, and
the entire tradition as a means of
reaching out to G-d and His Mitz
vos.
Agnon is a remarkably friend
ly host, but there is a melanch
oly about him, a certain apart
ness from other people. He is
gentle and soft-spoken and con
siderate, but he can be frank; he
enjoys being with people, yet
cherishes h|is privacy; he pos-

Dear Customer:
sesses a childlike innocence, but
has a shrewd and penetrating
mind; he disclaims any special
skills or talents, yet he hones his
work and polishes it like silver;
he is a disciplined writer, yet he
himself is a hopelessly disorgan
ized person.
As is his habit, he turned my
interview of him into an inter
view of me, and expressed a keen
interest in the Jewish life of At
lanta. He was delighted to learn
that Atlanta has a Mikva and
Kosher butchers and a Mohel and
Shochet; he was distressed to
learn that I was returning after
this semester.
“You must return to Israel and
live here permanently,” he said,
“and bring the entire commun
ity with you, so they live their
Torah naturally and without apol
ogy and self-consciousness.”
