of Cincinnati and the Hebrew
Union College. He fit perfectly
into the picture the congrega
tion wished to establish. As
time went on he would en
hance and even intensify it.
The ycu'g rabbi lost no time
in setting his course. In his in
augural sermon, on September
6, 1895, he told the congrega
tion, “Whatever tends to the
spiritual elevation of man;
whatever concerns the we’fare
of humanity, the preservation
• of morals; whatever conduces
to good and. eschews evi'; what
ever concerns itself with thp
graver consideration of 'i f e and •
true living is within the pro
vince of the pulpit.’’ He began
immediately to put these words
into action.

was invited to address the At
lanta Teachers Association and

three years he gave the open
ing prayer in the Georgia

States to the city of Atlanta.

to build a hospital for the He
brew Orphan's Home in 1897,
to establish the Social Settle
ment and Free Kindergarten

Association in 1903, the Fede
ration of Jewish Charities in
'905, arid the Jewish Educa
tional Alliance in 1909. He
organized the congregalion ii
West Point, Ga., in 1902, and
conducted services there once
a month for many years. He
espoused Masonry with great
devotion, serving as Grand
Master of Fulton Lodge in 1899
and being elevated to 33rd De
gree of the Scottish Rite in
1911. In 1905 the Governor of
Georgia appointed him to re
present the state at a confer
ence on Imrhigration and Quar
antine, the first of many simi
lar honors on a city and state
wide level (the Mayor of
/ tlanta designated him to be in
c large of all civilian relief af
ter the Great Fire of 1917).
