is “Reb Moshe Ba-ba-ba,” a
man to whom every minute
savored of Paradise and with
an impeccable well of tales
about saints. Another radiant
Jew is “Reb Asher the Dairy
man,” a man whom “God had
endowed with many, many,
gifts including “the voice of a
lion, a man of physical power
whose “house was whole,
placid, healthy” even as the
Singer house was “filled with
problems, doubts and unrest.”
Asher is a picture of a man in
perfect balance, but when the
Singer home catches fire he is
there in rescue as if impelled
by a mystic force.
Singer is intrigued by the
mystic threads in human lives
Describing chassidim as they
scamper about in their silk
gabardines and sable hats, he
tells us “I felt that the force
that propelled them was so
great that they would suddenly
spread their coattails and soar
over the rooftops.” This is
strikingly Chagal-like in its
reality.
Unique as it was, the Jewish
enclave in which Singer lived
was now becoming more sensi
tive to the winds of change
that were coming over the
world then. But now war came,
the first World, and the young
man in whom the seeds of writ
ing were beginning to take
hold, went to Bilgoray, Galicia,
where nothing had changed
over the centuries. “In this
world of old Jewishness,” Sing
er tells us, “I had a chance
to see our past as it really was.
Time seemed to flow back
wards. I lived Jewish history.”
If Singer’s world was shaken
to its roots by the first world
war, it was obliterated totally
with the coming of the new
barbarians. By recreating for
us that vanished world, Singer
in a sense has brought it back,
to life.
The impact of the work is
that of an artistic documenta
tion of an era, of a unique en
clave, of the mores and customs
and the very civilization of a
people. The tales transcend
literary evaluation, for they are
of an essence for which other
rods are required.
