they grow up and look back.
Then they’ll see! Any way,
how does Daddy know? Nobody
can possibly learn any thing in
this messed up world. Us poor,
weak mortals who haven’t got
a say in what happens to us.
We can never eveh knew why
we are here or what every
thing’s all about. Maybe when
I grow up I’ll be able to think
a lot, like Socrates, and come
up with some of the answers.
Then I’ll be great and all the
kids will be sorry they weren’t
nice to me and invite me to
their parties. I’ll be great and
famous and they’ll be sorry!
I’ll rise above them!”
Tears and crying followed, as
the truth came out at last. “Oh.
but I want to have it now! I
want fun and popularity! I
don’t like being different. I
want to be popular nOio'- Now!
Now! Now! Now!”
Stabbing thoughts ignited an
inevitable release of tension
and anxiety. Tears and crying
and questions and sobs and
tears and silent crying, less
questions and then., sleep. A
‘sleep filled w i t h distorted
.dreams, blurred visions of
life—expressive, torturing hal
lucinations of the mind—a
mass turmoil of emotion and
confusion, projected from the
inner mind, termed Id. Disturb
ed dreams were acted out with
in the few square inches of Les
lie’s skull, in such vague real
ity, pulled from the dark,
dense jungle of the subcon
scious. But it was sleep, never-
~ thrloss. and fort he aware, con”
r;ciousne>ss. an esr
reality, life, and problems. At
least for the time being, a rest
less mind found a calm.
Life went on. Time passed
more quickly than ever before,
so Leslie felt. As she looked
back, everyday was like the
others, each was absolved in
the continuous moving on of
life and time. All was the
s a m e—so every one else
thought. But in reality, all was
not the same. The' apparent
changes were noticed by her
parents: Leslie’s eyes had been
opened a little more, her brain
had become more perceptive,
and her h£art more sensitive.
As is typical of all stages of liv
ing, friendships change, values
alter, ideas and ideals are re
placed with different ideas and
ideals. Life went on. And Les
lie gradually became an inde
pendent,- self-contained unit—■
ONE.
One afternoon, as Leslie sat
in the familiar study hall, she
studied her hands carefully.
They weren’t as beautiful and
graceful as were those of her
friends. The long, prudently,
pofished and filed nails, worn so
proudly by all the girls, looked
somehow odd and out of place
on her, muscular, almost mas
culine hands. These hands,
skilled at writing, art. helping,
were made for other uses than
’needless “show”. Leslie realized
this. If she were ever to be a
great artist, writer, doctor or
whatever, it would not matter
how beautiful her friends’
hands were compared to hers.
Strangely and suddenly reliev
ed, she began to know at her
once, “pride and joy”, until all
that was left, were ten, ordin
ary, yet unique fingernails. But
for some peculiar reason, al-
though they were gone,
nr
-now—
Leslie’s hands looked if they
ruely belonged to hejr. They
’ere her hands, and she was
eslie and she knew it. That.
was most important.
